The short answer
- For one or two handguns plus letter-size papers, my pick is the SentrySafe SFW123GDC: UL Classified for 1 hour up to 1700°F, keypad plus key.
- For legal-size papers and several handguns, the SentrySafe SFW205CWB takes a 14 in sheet flat; for long guns, the Kodiak KBX5629 holds the most.
- Only the two SentrySafe picks carry an independent fire classification; the Kodiak, Hornady and Fortress ratings are the makers' own.
- Bag your papers and add desiccant, because fire insulation holds moisture.
Picture a closet shelf with a handgun case, a folder of passports and birth certificates, and a deed in a manila envelope, all waiting for one box that handles a fire and a burglar. The best safe for guns and documents for most homes is the SentrySafe SFW123GDC: UL Classified for 1 hour up to 1700°F, a keypad with a backup key, and room for a handgun beside letter-size papers. For legal-size papers I’d step up to the SentrySafe SFW205CWB, and for rifles the Kodiak KBX5629. If you mostly need long gun fire protection, my guide to fire rated gun safes goes deeper on that.
Best safe for guns and documents – the short answer
Pick the safe by the papers first, then the guns, then the certifier of the fire rating. I checked every interior against letter (8.5 x 11 in) and legal (8.5 x 14 in) sheets and noted who stands behind each fire number:

- Handgun plus letter papers: SentrySafe SFW123GDC (UL fire rating, keypad and key).
- Several handguns plus legal papers: SentrySafe SFW205CWB (UL fire rating, dial).
- Handguns on a budget, thick door: Hornady Fireproof Keypad Safe (maker’s rating).
- Long guns plus papers: Kodiak KBX5629, or the Fortress 24 Gun Fire Safe on a budget (both makers’ ratings).
The best safe for guns and documents picks
Each of these five safes holds guns and papers, has its own in-stock Amazon listing and appears on at least two ranking guides. The Brownells video below walks through the Hornady interior, a useful look at how a handgun and paperwork share a small fire safe. How we picked: I started from the pages that rank for this search and its close variants (Cape Fear Investigative, American Firearms, Gun Safes Resource and Reviewed among them), kept the safes two or more recommend, then checked every spec on the maker’s page and read owner reviews.

SentrySafe SFW123GDC: Best overall for a handgun and papers

3.5Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)6/10
- Fire protection9/10
- Access (speed and ease)7/10
- Capacity5/10
- Value8/10
I gave fire 9 because UL classified the 1-hour rating and ETL verified the water rating; security 6 for live-locking bolts and bolt-down hardware on an 87 lb body; access 7 for a keypad with a key backup; capacity 5 for one or two handguns plus letter files; value 8 for an independent rating.
What owners and reviewers say review themes from 1,991 owner reviews, plus 16 posts and reviews we read
Praised for
- Plenty of room for document folders, with a useful locking drawer
- Easy to program a code, and the interior light helps
- One owner with a visual impairment found the phone-style keypad easy
Common complaints
- Four of the ten Walmart reviews we read describe a safe that arrived dented or damaged
- A few owners on SentrySafe's own review page report trouble opening it with the code or key
- One owner's 3-ring binder only fits standing up, which blocks the shelf

Who it's for: For someone who keeps a handgun and the family's papers in one box and wants an independent fire rating; at 13.8 in tall inside, legal-size papers don't fit unfolded, and 86.69 lb still needs bolting down.
This is the safe I’d put a handgun, passports, a will and a stack of letter folders into. SentrySafe lists the SentrySafe SFW123GDC as UL Classified for 1 hour up to 1700°F and ETL Verified for 24 hours in 8 in of water, so both numbers come from outside labs, not the brand. The interior is 13.8 in tall, 12.6 in wide and 11.9 in deep: a letter sheet lies flat with room for a pistol case beside it. A legal sheet won’t fit unfolded, because no inside side reaches 14 in. Entry is a digital keypad with a backup key, and it ships with bolt-down hardware, which matters at 86.69 lb. Owners on Walmart and SentrySafe’s own pages like the room for folders, the locking drawer and how easy the code is to set. The repeated complaints: dented deliveries, a few owners who struggled to open it, and one whose 3-ring binder only fits standing up. Inspect it on arrival and test the key before loading it.
SentrySafe SFW205CWB: Best for legal-size papers and several handguns

3.3Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)6/10
- Fire protection9/10
- Access (speed and ease)5/10
- Capacity6/10
- Value7/10
I gave fire 9 for the UL Classified hour and ETL water rating; security 6 for live-locking bolts and a 124.8 lb body with bolt-down hardware; access 5 because a dial is slow in the dark; capacity 6 for 2 cu ft that takes legal papers flat; value 7 against the smaller SFW123GDC.
What owners and reviewers say review themes from 353 owner reviews, plus 3 posts and reviews we read
Praised for
- One owner said the door swings easily and locking is easier than on their 1.2 cu ft SentrySafe
- The same owner liked the big dial with large, clear numbers
Common complaints
- Two owners reported shipping damage, one cosmetic (offset with a rebate) and one unit that arrived damaged
Read on: SentrySafe owner reviews: SFW205CWB (353 reviews)
Who it's for: For a household with legal-size deeds and several handguns that wants no batteries to fail; a dial is slower than a keypad at night, and at 124.8 lb it needs a solid floor and help to move.
When the paperwork is the bigger job, I’d pick the SentrySafe SFW205CWB. It carries the same UL Classified rating (1 hour up to 1700°F) and ETL water rating (24 hours in 8 in) as the SFW123GDC, in a 2 cu ft body. Its 14.8 in wide floor takes a legal deed flat, and 19.6 in of height leaves room for several handguns in cases plus ammo boxes. The lock is a dial combination, so there are no batteries to die, which I like for a safe that mostly guards papers. The trade-off is speed: a dial is slow in the dark, so I wouldn’t make this the home-defense gun’s only safe. It weighs 124.8 lb and includes bolt-down hardware. One owner on SentrySafe’s review page says the door swings and locks more easily than their smaller SentrySafe and likes the large, clear dial numbers. Two owners report shipping damage, so check the door and hinge side before you sign for it.
Hornady Fireproof Keypad Safe: Best compact keypad safe

3.0Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)6/10
- Fire protection5/10
- Access (speed and ease)7/10
- Capacity5/10
- Value7/10
I gave security 6 for the 8-gauge door and included anchors on a 49 lb body; fire 5 because the 30-minute rating is Hornady's own; access 7 for a keypad with backup keys and a light; capacity 5 for a few handguns plus papers; value 7 for the thick door at this size.
What owners and reviewers say from 4 reviews and posts we read
Praised for
- Solid and the right size to bolt down out of sight
- Good for one or two handguns plus ammo boxes and papers
Common complaints
- Not a fast-access safe
- Opening knob worked loose for one owner, and one arrived dented from shipping

Who it's for: For a handgun owner who wants a thick door and a keypad at a small size; the fire rating names no lab, and at 49 lb the included concrete anchors are not optional.
The Hornady Fireproof Keypad Safe is the one I’d pick for handguns and papers when a thick door matters more than an independent fire rating. Hornady lists a 16-gauge steel body, an 8-gauge door, a keypad with backup keys and an interior light. Its fire rating, 30 minutes up to 1400°F, names no lab, so I read it as Hornady’s own claim. Inside it measures 10.2 in tall, 13.2 in wide and 15 in deep: legal sheets lie flat on the 15 in side, though tall boxes won’t stand up. At 49 lb it comes with concrete anchor bolts; use them. Owners in r/CAguns call it right for one or two handguns plus ammo and papers, but not a fast-access safe. A Rural King buyer reports the knob working loose, and another buyer got a dented delivery. For the gun you reach for at night, I’d pair it with a nightstand handgun safe.
Kodiak KBX5629: Best for long guns and documents

3.5Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)7/10
- Fire protection5/10
- Access (speed and ease)7/10
- Capacity9/10
- Value7/10
I gave security 7 for 14-gauge steel, a 333 lb body and floor bolting; fire 5 because the 30-minute rating is Rhino's own; access 7 for a UL Listed electronic lock; capacity 9 for long guns plus a document shelf; value 7 given owner reports on locks and service.
What owners and reviewers say from 3 reviews and posts we read
Praised for
- Big capacity and a fire lining for the money
- Owners who bought used or on sale felt they got a lot of safe
Common complaints
- Locks breaking, rust and slow customer service on Kodiak models
- A musty smell inside when a rechargeable dehumidifier was never recharged
Read on: Reddit r/gundeals: Kodiak 57 gun safe (search excerpt only) · Northwest Firearms: Kodiak gun safe smelly (read in full) · Reddit r/canadaguns: Does anyone have any experience with Kodiak gun safes? (search excerpt only)
Who it's for: For a homeowner with long guns who wants the papers in the same locked steel; the fire rating names no lab, Rhino publishes no interior size, and at 333 lb it belongs on a ground floor or slab.
For rifles plus the family papers, I’d go with the Kodiak KBX5629 from Rhino Metals. Rhino lists 14-gauge steel, a UL Listed electronic lock (a lock listing, not a fire rating), a claimed 42 long guns, a door organizer with handgun holders and pockets, and a California DOJ firearm safety device listing. The fire rating, 30 minutes at 1400°F, names no lab. Rhino gives 333 lb approximate net weight and 56 x 29 x 22 in outside, but no interior size, so measure a shelf before you plan file boxes. Because the rating is the maker’s, I’d keep originals in a small UL-rated document box on a shelf here. Owners who bought on sale feel they got a lot of safe. Complaints in r/gundeals point to locks and slow service on Kodiak models, and a Northwest Firearms member traced a musty smell to a dehumidifier nobody recharged. Papers suffer from that first, so add a dehumidifier for a gun safe.
Fortress 24 Gun Fire Safe: Best budget long gun safe for papers

2.9Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)6/10
- Fire protection4/10
- Access (speed and ease)6/10
- Capacity7/10
- Value7/10
I gave security 6 for 14-gauge steel and five bolts; fire 4 for the shortest, lowest-temperature rating here with no lab named; access 6 for an electronic lock with a key but owner reports of lock failures; capacity 7 for long guns plus papers; value 7 for the warranty.
What owners and reviewers say from 4 reviews and posts we read
Praised for
- Solid, sturdy safe with a heavy door for the money
- The keypad works well for most owners
Common complaints
- Electronic lock failures, including one owner whose override key also failed and who got little help from the maker
- An error light locked one owner out, with batteries not reachable from outside

(search excerpt only) · Lowe's: Fortress 24-Gun Fireproof Electronic Keypad Gun Safe reviews (search excerpt only) · Facebook group: Who can unlock a Fortress 24EBF gun safe with error light (search excerpt only)
Who it's for: For a first-time long gun owner who wants papers locked up too; it has the shortest rating and lowest test temperature here, with no lab named, so keep originals in a UL-rated document box on the shelf.
The Fortress 24 Gun Fire Safe is my entry pick for a first long gun safe that also holds the household papers. Fortress lists 14-gauge steel, three 1 in active bolts and two dead bolts, an electronic lock with an Alarm-U function and a backup key, and a lifetime warranty. Its rating is 30 minutes at 1200°F, the shortest time and lowest test temperature here, and Fortress names no lab. Neither Fortress nor Amazon gives the interior size; the Amazon listing gives 55 x 24 x 21 in outside. Walmart buyers describe a solid safe with a heavy door, and most say the keypad works. The warning sign is the lock: a Lowe’s reviewer says a static shock killed the keypad and the override key failed too, and a Facebook group owner was locked out by an error light with no outside battery access. I’d test the backup key on day one and store it away from the safe.
Safes for guns and documents compared
Only the two SentrySafe picks have an independent fire classification, and only three publish an interior that shows whether your papers fit. The table lines up what decides a combined gun and document safe; how we score safes explains the scores on each card.

Which safe for guns and documents fits what you store
Match the safe to the gun you need fastest and the largest paper you keep; that rule picks for you. This is my own chooser, built from the verified specs above:

| What you store | My pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1-2 handguns, passports, letter folders | SentrySafe SFW123GDC | UL fire rating, keypad plus key, letter fits flat |
| Several handguns, legal deeds, no batteries | SentrySafe SFW205CWB | UL fire rating, 14.8 in floor, dial lock |
| Handguns and papers, thick door, small space | Hornady Fireproof Keypad Safe | 8-gauge door, legal fits flat, anchors included |
| Long guns plus papers | Kodiak KBX5629 | Most room, door pockets, CA DOJ listed |
| First long gun safe on a budget | Fortress 24 Gun Fire Safe | Backup key, lifetime warranty |
If one gun is for home defense, I’d keep it in a quick-access safe by the bed and put the papers, plus the other guns, in the fire safe. Speed and fire protection pull in different directions.
Do documents fit flat? Safe interior math for papers
A letter sheet needs an 8.5 x 11 in floor and a legal sheet an 8.5 x 14 in floor; check those against the interior before you buy. Here is how the math works on the three safes that publish an interior:
- SFW123GDC (12.6 x 11.9 in floor, 13.8 in tall): letter fits flat with about 1.6 in to spare on the long side; legal fails, because 14 in beats every inside side.
- SFW205CWB (14.8 x 11.9 in floor): legal fits flat with 0.8 in to spare; letter folders also stand upright in 19.6 in of height.
- Hornady 95407 (13.2 x 15 in floor, 10.2 in tall): legal fits flat along the 15 in depth; letter folders can’t stand upright, since 11 in beats the 10.2 in height, so lay them flat.
The volumes check out too: 19.6 x 14.8 x 11.9 in is about 3,452 cubic inches, or 2.0 cu ft, matching SentrySafe’s figure. For the two long gun safes, the makers publish only outside sizes, so measure a shelf before you plan file boxes.
Fire ratings for papers in a gun and document safe
A fire rating only helps your papers if it is long enough and someone other than the maker checked it. Dean Safe notes that paper begins to discolor just above 350° F, scorches near 410°F and ignites at 451°F. That is why UL 72 Class 350 keeps the inside at or below 350°F for the rated time.
- UL Classified (SentrySafe SFW123GDC, SFW205CWB): an outside lab ran the fire test, here 1 hour up to 1700°F.
- ETL Verified (both SentrySafe water ratings): Intertek’s mark on the 8 in, 24 hour water claim.
- Maker’s own rating (Kodiak, Hornady, Fortress): the brand assigns the minutes and temperature and names no lab.
A UL Listed lock, like the one on the Kodiak, says nothing about fire. USB drives and photos need a lower interior limit than paper; my fireproof document safe guide covers those ratings. Theft is the other half: the Bureau of Justice Statistics estimates an average of 232,400 firearms stolen each year in burglaries and other property crimes from 2005 to 2010, so bolt down whichever safe you choose. Storage rules differ by state and city; California keeps its own firearm safety device roster, and I’d check your local rules, since this guide isn’t legal advice.
Gun and document safe problems owners run into, and the fix
Most trouble with a combined gun and document safe comes from moisture, a short fire rating, a dead lock or a full shelf. These come up again and again in the owner threads I read.
Moldy passports and papers in a fire safe
Collectors Universe members say fire safes are notorious for holding moisture, and one saw paperwork mold within a couple of weeks; an r/Wellthatsucks post shows a passport growing mold. The fire insulation holds water. SentrySafe tells owners to keep the desiccant in and seal moisture-sensitive items in another container. Put papers in zip bags, add desiccant and open the safe now and then.
Expecting a “fireproof” safe to survive any fire
Gun owners in r/liberalgunowners and r/Safes learn after big fires that a rating is a time limit, not immunity. Buy the longest independently rated time you can, keep copies of key papers somewhere else, and read whether gun safes are fireproof for what the minutes mean.
Keypad dies with no backup
A Winchester owner on The High Road was locked out with no backup key while the maker was closed. Four of my five picks list a key or have no electronics; keep that key outside the safe, change batteries yearly and contact the maker with proof of ownership if a lock fails.
Fire or burglary, which one wins
Shoppers in r/Safes ask whether one home safe can do both well. For papers, the UL-rated SentrySafes lead; for guns and theft, steel, weight and bolting matter more. A big gun safe with a small UL-rated box inside covers both.
The gun count fills up on day one
Owners on The High Road advise cutting the advertised long gun count by at least a third. Leave shelf space for the document box and plan on fewer rifles than the Kodiak’s 42 or the Fortress’s 24.
From our notes: The 13.8 in inside height of the SentrySafe SFW123GDC is what reshaped this list for me. I had assumed any 1.23 cu ft safe would take a legal deed, but no inside side reaches 14 in, so that sheet has to fold. The SFW205CWB’s 14.8 in floor fixed that, and the Hornady’s 15 in depth did too. Two picks we planned on, a Steelwater long gun safe and a larger SentrySafe, dropped out because their Amazon listings were unavailable or pointed to another model on the day we checked.
Our verdict on the best safe for guns and documents
For a handgun and the family papers, the best safe for guns and documents is the SentrySafe SFW123GDC, bolted down, with papers bagged and the backup key stored elsewhere. Choose the SFW205CWB for legal-size papers, the Hornady for a thick door in a small space, and the Kodiak or Fortress for long guns with a UL-rated document box on a shelf. That closet shelf from the start fits in one box once you size it to the largest sheet. Run through our safe buying checklist next, and if long guns are the main job, compare the fire rated gun safes side by side.
Questions safe buyers ask
What is the best safe for guns and documents?
For one or two handguns and letter-size papers, I pick the SentrySafe SFW123GDC, which carries a UL Classified 1-hour fire rating up to 1700°F and a keypad with a backup key. For legal papers choose the SFW205CWB; for long guns, the Kodiak KBX5629.
Can I keep important documents in a gun safe?
Yes, as long as the safe has a fire rating you trust and the papers are protected from moisture. Most gun safe fire ratings are the maker's own, so I keep originals in zip bags and, in a big gun safe, inside a small UL-rated document box on a shelf.
Will papers survive a fire inside a gun safe?
Only for the rated time. Paper starts to discolor just above 350°F, so a fire rating means the inside should stay below that for the stated minutes. A 30-minute rating can be exceeded by a house fire that burns longer.
Should guns and documents go in separate safes?
Often yes. A bedside handgun needs fast access, while papers need the best fire rating you can get. Many owners keep the defense gun in a quick access safe and the papers plus other guns in a UL-rated fire safe.
What size safe do I need for guns and documents?
Measure the papers first. Letter-size sheets need an 11 x 8.5 in floor, legal-size sheets a 14 x 8.5 in floor. The SFW123GDC takes letter only; the SFW205CWB and Hornady take legal flat. Then add room for each gun.
