Our top picks

  1. Best for Liberty safes · 2.9/5Liberty Safe Door Panel Organizer (Size 20-25)

The short answer

  • Measure the inside width of your safe door panel first: it decides which gun safe door organizer fits, more than any brand does.
  • For doors 23 to 43.5 inches wide, my pick is the Stealth MOLLE Medium, whose six holsters move anywhere on the panel.
  • Liberty owners with a 20-25 size safe get a sewn panel built for that door; the NEXT STATION fits 18.5 to 23 inch doors.
  • Check shelf clearance before you load the door, keep the clips snug but not cranked on the fireboard, and stay under the load limit.

A gun safe door organizer turns the empty inside of the safe door into storage for handguns, magazines and papers. The best gun safe door organizer is the one that will fit your safe door’s inside width and clear your shelves when the door closes. For most long gun safes with a door panel 23 to 43.5 inches wide, I pick the Stealth MOLLE Medium.

Picture a safe so full that the pistols sit in a pile on the top shelf, and every range trip starts with unstacking cases. The door is the one surface doing nothing. I compared five door organizers that the top-ranking pages keep recommending, checked each against the maker’s specs and read what owners report. If your safe also holds the family papers, our guide to a safe for guns and documents covers that split.

Gun safe door organizer comparison by door width and holsters

The deciding spec for a gun safe door organizer is the inside door width it fits, then how many holsters it carries and whether they move. A panel that is too narrow flaps; one too wide will not clip on.

None of these is a fire-rated product. They organize the door; the safe’s steel and fire lining do the protecting.

How we picked these gun safe door organizers

A gun safe door organizer made this list only if at least two top-ranking pages recommend it and it has its own in-stock Amazon US listing. The search results for this keyword are mostly safe dealers, so I read the Dean Safe and Southeast Safes collections, the Cape Fear Investigative and Exoc Tactical roundups, the Stealth and Liberty product pages and a video review. SnapSafe’s 75800 organizer had no Amazon US listing and Wilde Custom Gear sells only direct, so both were dropped. We have not installed these organizers in our own safes. The facts below come from maker pages, retailer review pages and owner reports, scored with the rubric on our how we score page.

Who it's for: For owners of a mid-size or large long gun safe with a 5/8 inch fireboard door panel who want to store several handguns and magazines on the door; check that your door is at least 23 inches wide inside.

The Stealth MOLLE Gun Safe Door Panel Organizer Medium is a MOLLE gun safe door organizer from Stealth Safes. Stealth lists a 47 x 22 inch panel that fits doors 23 to 43.5 inches wide on a 5/8 inch fireboard, with six pistol holsters, two triple magazine pouches, one medium and two large zippered pockets, six fastening clips and a metal top rod.

What sets it apart is the MOLLE webbing. Stealth’s own pitch is that sewn panels fail when “an entire row of pistol holsters runs right into the top shelf.” Here every holster unsnaps and moves, so I can lay out rows around my shelf lines instead of rearranging shelves. Owners on Dean Safe’s review page say the holsters hang securely, the door still closes and the shelf space gain is large. The complaints are about fit: some owners had to modify clips or remove an inner door panel, and a few say the hook-and-loop straps needed twisting to line up. Stealth backs it with a lifetime warranty.

I gave fire a low 3 because the Cool Pocket claim has no UL or ETL rating behind it. Access loses points for sewn-in holsters; capacity and value reflect six holsters plus pockets on a panel sized for Liberty doors.

Who it's for: For owners of a Liberty 20, 23 or 25 size safe, or another safe with a 5/8 inch door panel 20 to 22 inches wide inside; the holsters are sewn in, so check where they land against your shelves.

The Liberty Safe Door Panel Organizer (Size 20-25) is a sewn nylon gun safe door organizer from Liberty Safe, made for its 20, 23 and 25 size safes. Liberty says it mounts on the existing fabric door panel with included brackets. Dean Safe lists an 18 x 48 inch panel with six quick-draw holsters, document storage, zip pockets, choke tube holders and the thermal-lined Cool Pocket, held by six clips.

Fit is where I would slow down. Dean Safe’s listing says the door panel must be at least 20 and no more than 25 inches wide, yet its longer description says no wider than 22 inches. Owners also fit Liberty panels to Stack-On and Red Head safes, so measure and call the dealer if you sit near 22 inches. Owners on Dean Safe’s review pages praise a close fit, solid build and installs of about five minutes. One recurring wish is bigger document pockets. The holsters are sewn, so I would check where each row lands against your shelves before loading it.

Who it's for: For owners of a mid-size gun safe with an 18.5 to 23 inch door panel who want removable holsters on a budget; the lower pockets are fixed, so plan the top rows around your shelves.

The NEXT STATION Gun Safe Door Organizer with Removable Pistol Holders is a fabric gun safe door organizer from NEXT STATION for doors 18.5 to 23 inches wide. It carries five removable pistol holders, pistol and rifle magazine pouches, mesh and zipper pockets, rifle holders and a document pocket. Cape Fear Investigative lists 1680D Oxford fabric with a steel top crossbar and 12 compartments.

The best owner evidence I found is a video review from Handy Homestead Reviews. His door is just under 22 inches wide. He used the clips for a 1/2 inch board and notes a second clip set for a 3/4 inch board. Once loaded, he says, it sits well and does not bow off the door. His problem was shelf clearance, with just under 4 inches between shelf and door lip. Handguns and magazines hit the shelf until he moved holsters around. The top rows use hook-and-loop, so that fix is possible here; the lower pockets are fixed.

Read on: Judge.me: Stealth Molle door panel organizer reviews (Dean Safe) · Dean Safe: Stealth Medium Molle Gun Safe Door Panel Organizer

Who it's for: For owners of a wide long gun safe or vault-style safe with a door panel at least 28 inches wide and 50 inches tall, storing many handguns on the door; too big for narrower doors.

The Stealth MOLLE Gun Safe Door Panel Organizer Large is the largest MOLLE gun safe door organizer from Stealth. Stealth lists a 50 x 28 inch panel for a 5/8 inch fireboard at least 28 inches wide and 50 inches tall, up to 55.5 inches wide. It carries eight pistol holsters, two triple magazine pouches, two medium and two large zippered pockets, six clips and a lifetime warranty.

I would only buy it for a wide door. On a 30 inch door the Large uses the space the Medium leaves bare, and eight holsters is the most of any pick here. Owner reports for this size are thinner. The two I read on Dean Safe’s page call it well made and easy to install. The fit complaints owners report for the Medium apply here too, so check your door clips before ordering.

What owners and reviewers say from 1 review and posts we read

Praised for

  • Well built and useful from the start
  • Many ways to mount it in a safe or on pegboard

Common complaints

  • Mesh pockets are loose for small or oddly shaped guns

Read on: Cedar Mill Fine Firearms: Lockdown Handgun and AR Upper Hanger review

Who it's for: For owners of a small gun safe, cabinet or vault door with a narrow panel who want a few handguns or spare uppers off the shelf; the loose mesh pockets do not hold small pistols tightly.

The Lockdown Handgun and Tactical Rifle Upper Hanger is a narrow mesh-pocket gun safe door organizer from Lockdown, model 222817. Lockdown says it holds up to 6 handguns of any size or two AR-15 upper assemblies, in heavy-duty mesh pockets with elastic bands.

Cedar Mill Fine Firearms measured it at 8 by 30.5 inches and hung it from door clips, wallboard hooks or hook screws, even on a pegboard. That reviewer calls it well built and versatile. The catch is the loose mesh pockets, made roomy to fit many guns, so small pistols are not held tight. I would put it on the door of a small safe or cabinet where no full panel fits, or under a shelf in a big safe.

Which gun safe door organizer should you get

Match the organizer to your door width first, then to how many handguns you keep on the door.

  • Door 23 to 43.5 in, handguns that change often: Stealth MOLLE Medium.
  • Liberty 20, 23 or 25 size safe: Liberty Size 20-25 panel.
  • Door 18.5 to 23 in: NEXT STATION with removable holders.
  • Door 28 in or wider, eight or more handguns: Stealth MOLLE Large.
  • Narrow cabinet or small safe: Lockdown hanger.

How to measure a safe door for a door organizer

Measure the inside door panel, not the outside of the safe, and compare it with each organizer’s fit range.

Stealth MOLLE Gun Safe Door Panel Organizer Medium
Stealth MOLLE Gun Safe Door Panel Organizer Medium. Image: Stealth via Amazon.com
  1. Open the door fully and find the fabric or fireboard door panel.
  2. Measure its width edge to edge at the top, middle and bottom; use the smallest number.
  3. Measure its height from the top edge to the bottom edge.
  4. Check the panel thickness at the edge; Stealth’s clips are made for 5/8 inch fireboard.
  5. Measure from each shelf front to the closed door lip.
  6. Compare width and height with the fit ranges in the table above.

Step 5 is the one most buyers skip. A holstered pistol, especially one with a light or optic, adds depth on the door, and that depth has to fit between the shelf and the closed door.

Gun safe door organizer problems owners run into, and the fix

Most gun safe door organizer complaints come down to four things: a door that will not close, a cracked fireboard, odd door sizes and too much weight. The video below shows the clearance problem on a real install.

NEXT STATION Removable Gun Safe Door Organizer Review | Fits doors 18.5" - 23" | Easy to Install
Video: NEXT STATION Removable Gun Safe Door Organizer Review | Fits doors 18.5" - 23" | Easy to Install (Handy Homestead Reviews on YouTube)

Door will not close: holsters hit the shelves

This is the most common complaint. The NEXT STATION reviewer had to rearrange guns before his door would close, and an r/ar15 reply about door storage notes, “They would need to be mounted flat like pictured due to clearance issues.” The fix:

  • Close the door slowly with your deepest gun loaded and watch the shelf edge.
  • Put bulky guns in rows that sit between shelves.
  • Choose movable holsters (Stealth, NEXT STATION) if the shelf clearance is tight.

Cracked fireboard from overtightened clips

The door panel on many gun safes is fireboard, and it is brittle. In an r/guns thread on swapping a door organizer, one owner warns, “When replacing make sure not to over tighten as you can crack the fire board.” Snug the clips on the fireboard by hand, never drill through it, and ask your safe maker before changing the door.

Odd door sizes that no panel fits

Owners of less common safes, like a Cannon Valley Forge owner in r/GunsafeSpace, ask which aftermarket panel will fit at all. MOLLE panels with long straps cover the widest range, from 23 to 55.5 inches across the two Stealth sizes. For a narrow door, a single hanger like Lockdown’s is the practical answer.

Too much weight on the door

Every pound on the door hangs from the hinges. Dean Safe lists a maximum suggested load of 40 to 70 pounds for Liberty panels, depending on size, and Exoc Tactical warns that overloading can wear the hinges. I keep loose ammo and spare magazines off the door and store them on the floor of the safe.

From our notes: The Liberty Size 20-25 listing at Dean Safe gave me two different maximum widths, 25 inches in one line and 22 in the next. That one discrepancy changed how I wrote this guide. Instead of ranking brands first, I built the comparison around inside door width, because a panel that does not fit is the most expensive mistake here. The shelf clearance step came from the NEXT STATION video, where a door that looked roomy still would not close.

Does a gun safe door organizer affect fire protection

No organizer here adds rated fire protection, because none carries a UL or Intertek/ETL fire rating. Liberty’s Cool Pocket is described by Dean Safe as “extra fire protection up to an additional 50 degrees.” That is a maker claim repeated by a retailer, with no independent lab rating published.

What protects papers on the door is the safe’s own fire rating, so check who certified it. Our guide to fire ratings for gun safes explains UL classes versus a maker’s own test. Clip-on organizers need no drilling, which keeps the fire lining intact. Check your state’s official firearm storage rules too; an organizer does not change what your home requires.

Questions safe buyers ask

What is the best gun safe door organizer?

For most long gun safes with a door panel 23 to 43.5 inches wide, I pick the Stealth MOLLE Gun Safe Door Panel Organizer Medium, because its six holsters and pouches move on MOLLE webbing to clear your shelves. Owners of a Liberty 20, 23 or 25 size safe should look at Liberty's own Size 20-25 panel first.

Will a door organizer fit my safe door?

Measure the inside width and height of the fabric door panel, edge to edge, and compare it with the organizer's fit range, not its panel size. Stealth's Medium fits 23 to 43.5 inch doors and the Large 28 to 55.5 inches, the NEXT STATION 18.5 to 23 inches, and Lockdown's 8 inch hanger suits narrow cabinets.

Do door organizers reduce fire protection?

None of the organizers here carries a UL or Intertek/ETL fire rating, so they add no rated protection. The fire rating that matters is the safe's own, and you should check who certified it. Clip-on panels avoid drilling, but overtightened clips can crack the fireboard, so keep them snug only.

How much weight can a gun safe door organizer hold?

Dean Safe lists a maximum suggested load of 40 to 70 pounds for Liberty door panels, depending on panel size. I would stay well below that, keep ammunition on the floor of the safe and watch for the door sagging or the bolts dragging.

Why won't my safe door close after adding an organizer?

Holstered pistols and magazines usually hit the front edge of a shelf. Close the door slowly with the deepest gun loaded, then move bulky guns to rows between shelf lines; removable or MOLLE holsters make that easy.
