The short answer
- The best American made gun safe you can order online is the Fort Knox Original Pistol Box PB1: a 10-gauge steel body, a 3/16 in plate door and a Simplex mechanical lock, built in the USA.
- All five picks are US-made pistol boxes from Fort Knox and V-Line, sorted by where the gun lives: bedside, drawer, car, two handguns or travel.
- US-made long gun safes from Liberty, Fort Knox, Rhino Metals and AMSEC are sold through dealers and delivered by freight, not as Amazon listings.
- None of the five carries a fire rating; for documents and long guns, buy a dealer safe whose fire rating names who certified it.
The best American made gun safe you can order online today is the Fort Knox Original Pistol Box PB1, a 10-gauge steel pistol box with a Simplex mechanical lock, built in the USA. For rifles and shotguns, an American made gun safe from Liberty, Fort Knox, Rhino Metals or AMSEC is a dealer purchase delivered by freight.
I sorted the five US-built picks by where the gun lives, and every one comes from Fort Knox or V-Line, two makers that state their boxes are made in the USA. Locking up matters because an annual average of 232,400 guns were stolen in burglaries and other property crimes from 2005 through 2010. If you also store documents, read our fire ratings for gun safes first, because none of these boxes claims fire protection.
From our notes: The Fort Knox FTK-AUTO and the PB1 share one detail that surprised me: identical 10-gauge bodies and 3/16 in plate doors, though one weighs 14 lb and the other 22. Picture a deputy with a duty pistol by the bed and a compact in the truck: two boxes from one Fort Knox line, one lock layout to learn. That steel-for-size trade shaped this list.
American made gun safe comparison by steel, lock and size
The three Fort Knox boxes share a 10-gauge body and a 3/16 in door, while V-Line trades steel for a slimmer, lighter case. A lower gauge number means thicker steel:

| American made gun safe | Best for | Steel | Interior | Weight | Lock |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fort Knox Original Pistol Box PB1 | Bedside, 1-2 pistols | 10-gauge, 3/16 in door | 11.75 x 9.75 x 3.5 in | 22 lb | Simplex |
| Fort Knox Personal Pistol Box FK-PB4 | Drawer or shelf | 10-gauge, 3/16 in door | 8.5 x 10.5 x 4 in | 20 lb | Simplex |
| Fort Knox FTK-AUTO Pistol Box | Car | 10-gauge, 3/16 in door | 8.5 x 4.75 x 4 in | 14 lb | Simplex |
| V-Line Top Draw XD | Two handguns | 16-gauge | Up to 2 handguns | 12 lb | Simplex |
| V-Line Compact Pistol Safe 279-S | Travel | 18-gauge | 8.5 x 6.5 x 1.5 in | 5 lb | Simplex |
All five use a mechanical Simplex lock with no batteries, and none has a fire rating from UL, Intertek (ETL) or the maker.
American made gun safes, reviewed
Each American made gun safe below wins one placement: bedside, drawer, car, two handguns or travel. Scores follow our how we score rubric. Dean Safe’s video in this section walks through the Fort Knox pistol box, the top pick.

Fort Knox Original Pistol Box PB1: Best American made gun safe for the bedside

4.0Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)9/10
- Access (speed and ease)8/10
- Capacity8/10
- Value6/10
I scored security 9 for 10-gauge steel and a 3/16 in door, access 8 for a no-battery code you can enter by feel, and left fire out because Fort Knox makes no fire claim for its pistol boxes.
What we like
- 10-gauge body and 3/16 in plate door, the thickest steel here (Fort Knox)
- Gas strut holds the lid open; four 3/8 in anchor holes
- Made in the USA with a limited lifetime warranty
What we don't like
- No key override, so a forgotten code means a call to Fort Knox
- At 22 lb it slides on a smooth top unless you bolt it down
What owners and reviewers say from 4 reviews and posts we read
Praised for
- Owners call Fort Knox pistol boxes the standard for mechanical boxes
- Quiet, smooth buttons with a subtle click as the pins move
Common complaints
- An XDTalk reviewer found the box slid backward on counters and floors as the heavy lid opened
- No fire rating, as the same reviewer points out
Read on: XDTalk, Fort Knox FTK-PB (PB-1) Pistol Vault Review · r/handguns, looking for a good bedside pistol safe · r/CCW, storing a home defense and CCW pistol · Pew Pew Tactical, best bedside handgun safes
Who it's for: An owner who keeps one or two pistols by the bed and can bolt the box to a floor or a solid nightstand; at 22 lb with no key override, the code you set is the only way in.
The Fort Knox Original Pistol Box PB1 is a 10-gauge mechanical pistol safe from Fort Knox, and my top pick because it carries the most steel of any US-made box you can order online. Fort Knox lists a 3/16 in wrap-around plate door, a reinforced plate behind the Simplex lock and a gas strut that lifts the lid once the code is in.
The interior is 11.75 x 9.75 x 3.5 in, room for one or two handguns and spare magazines. It weighs 22 lb and has four 3/8 in anchor holes. It carries a limited lifetime warranty and has no key override.
What owners say: r/CCW and r/handguns posters treat Fort Knox boxes as the benchmark. An XDTalk reviewer found that the heavy lid made the box slide backward on counters and wood floors as it opened, which is one more reason I’d bolt it down.
Fort Knox Personal Pistol Box FK-PB4: Best American made gun safe for a drawer

3.8Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)9/10
- Access (speed and ease)8/10
- Capacity6/10
- Value6/10
I gave security 9 for the same 10-gauge steel as the PB1 and capacity 6 for one full-size pistol plus a magazine; fire is left out because Fort Knox makes no fire claim.
What we like
- Same 10-gauge body and 3/16 in plate door as the PB1 (Fort Knox)
- 9.5 in wide, narrow enough for many drawers and shelves
- Made in the USA with a limited lifetime warranty
What we don't like
- Front-opening door needs clearance in front of the box
- Smaller interior than the PB1 (8.5 x 10.5 x 4 in)
What owners and reviewers say from 5 reviews and posts we read
Praised for
- An r/CCW owner says he loves his PB4 and would buy it again
- Owners recommend it as the mechanical box to beat, as long as it is bolted down
Common complaints
- The door swings outward from the front, unlike the PB1's lift-up lid, so it needs room in front
- Heavy for its size, just under 20 lb by one reviewer's count
Read on: r/CCW, why pistol lockboxes cost what they do · r/CCW, handgun safe recommendations · r/CCW, question about Fort Knox pistol boxes · r/CCW, a guide to quick access pistol safes · Gun Safe Reviews Guy, handgun and small gun safes
Who it's for: An owner who stores one full-size pistol and a spare magazine in a deep drawer or on a shelf; it still weighs 20 lb and needs its four anchor holes used.
The Fort Knox Personal Pistol Box FK-PB4 is a narrower 10-gauge pistol safe from Fort Knox, and my pick when the PB1 will not fit. It keeps the same 3/16 in plate door and Simplex lock, but the box is 9.5 in wide, 12 in deep and 5 in tall, and its door swings out from the front instead of lifting.
Inside you get 8.5 x 10.5 x 4 in, enough for a full-size pistol and a magazine, with carpet lining, four 3/8 in anchor holes and a 20 lb weight. The Amazon listing gives the Simplex lock 1,081 combinations and calls the box California DOJ certified.
What owners say: one r/CCW owner says he has the PB4, loves it and would buy it again. Another r/CCW reply recommends it but adds that you must absolutely bolt it down.
Fort Knox FTK-AUTO Pistol Box: Best American made gun safe for the car

3.4Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)8/10
- Access (speed and ease)8/10
- Capacity4/10
- Value6/10
I scored security 8 because 10-gauge steel only works once it is bolted to the car, capacity 4 for one compact pistol, and left fire out because Fort Knox makes no fire claim.
What we like
- 10-gauge steel at 14 lb, far tougher than plastic car cases (Fort Knox)
- Four 3/8 in holes to bolt it to a vehicle floor or console
- Made in the USA with a limited lifetime warranty
What we don't like
- Bolting it into a car means drilling the floor or a bracket
- Interior is only 4.75 in deep, so a full-size pistol may not fit
What owners and reviewers say from 4 reviews and posts we read
Praised for
- r/CCW posters suggest it for a trunk spot you can bolt to
- Owners prefer its 10-gauge steel over plastic car boxes
Common complaints
- Drawing from a box while seated and belted is awkward, an r/CCW poster notes
- It only adds security once it is bolted down in the vehicle
Read on: r/CCW, leaving a gun in the car while at work · r/CCW, recommend me a quality handgun safe · r/CCW, car gun safe selection · r/CCW, question about Fort Knox pistol boxes
Who it's for: A driver who needs to lock a compact pistol in the car; you have to drill and bolt it to the vehicle, and the 4.75 in deep interior suits a compact gun, not a full-size one with a light.
The Fort Knox FTK-AUTO is a compact 10-gauge pistol safe from Fort Knox, and my pick for the gun that rides in a vehicle. It measures 9.5 in wide, 6 in deep and 5 in tall, weighs 14 lb and keeps the 3/16 in plate door and Simplex lock of its bigger siblings.
The interior is 8.5 x 4.75 x 4 in, so check that your pistol fits before buying; a compact handgun suits it best. Four 3/8 in holes let you bolt it under a seat, in a console or in the trunk.
What owners say: an r/CCW poster suggests it when you have a trunk spot to bolt it to and another notes that drawing from any box while seated and belted is awkward, so plan where it mounts.
V-Line Top Draw XD: Best American made gun safe for two handguns

3.7Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)7/10
- Access (speed and ease)8/10
- Capacity8/10
- Value7/10
I gave capacity 8 for two pistols in a 2.34 in tall case and security 7 for 16-gauge steel helped by the bolted lock cover; fire is left out because V-Line makes no fire claim.
What we like
- Holds up to two handguns (V-Line)
- Internal lock cover bolted to 3/8 in welded steel blocks
- Made in the USA; California DOJ approved
What we don't like
- 16-gauge steel, thinner than the 10-gauge Fort Knox boxes
- Two full-size pistols fit only barely; the mounting bracket is extra
What owners and reviewers say review themes from 37 owner reviews, plus 4 posts and reviews we read
Praised for
- An r/handguns owner says it is easy to bolt down
- Buyers who want no battery and no key land on it in r/SpringfieldArmory threads
Common complaints
- Two full-size handguns fit, but only barely, per an r/handguns owner
- Shoppers in r/guns find the Tactical Top Draw and XD versions hard to tell apart; the XD adds the lock cover
Read on: r/handguns, bedside safe options · r/SpringfieldArmory, best handgun safe · r/guns, V-Line Tactical Top Draw vs Top Draw XD · V-Line, Top Draw XD customer reviews (37 reviews)
Who it's for: An owner with two handguns who wants a low case for a shelf, under a desk or bolted to a bed frame bracket; the 16-gauge steel is thinner than any Fort Knox box, so mount it.
The V-Line Top Draw XD is a slim top-opening handgun safe from V-Line, built in Simi Valley, California, and my pick for two pistols in one low case. It is 12.25 x 9.5 x 2.34 in plus the knob, weighs 12 lb and uses 16-gauge steel.
The XD version adds a heavy-duty internal lock cover bolted to 3/8 in welded steel blocks, which the older Top Draw lacked. V-Line sells an optional quick-release bracket and lists it as California DOJ approved.
What owners say: an r/handguns owner fits two full-size handguns, barely, and says it is easy to bolt down.
V-Line Compact Pistol Safe 279-S: Lightest American made gun safe for travel

3.1Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)5/10
- Access (speed and ease)8/10
- Capacity4/10
- Value8/10
I gave value 8 for the lowest weight and a cable option, security 5 for 18-gauge steel and capacity 4 for one small pistol; fire is left out because V-Line makes no fire claim.
What we like
- Only 5 lb and 9.5 x 7.25 x 2 in (V-Line)
- Accepts V-Line's optional security cable; TSA compliant (listing)
- Made in the USA; California DOJ approved
What we don't like
- 18-gauge steel, the thinnest of the five
- The lock housing takes up much of the small interior
What owners and reviewers say from 3 reviews and posts we read
Praised for
- Parents in r/daddit like that V-Line boxes need no batteries
- r/CCW posters list V-Line with Fort Knox among the best small boxes
Common complaints
- An r/Glocks owner found that fitting the gun and a spare magazine takes trial and error
- A r/daddit parent says V-Line boxes will not stop a determined criminal
Read on: r/Glocks, V-Line Compact Pistol Safe · r/daddit, what safe do firearm owning dads use · r/CCW, handgun safe recommendations
Who it's for: Someone who carries one compact pistol away from home; the 18-gauge steel and 1.5 in tall interior make it a lockable travel case, not a bedside safe for a full-size gun.
The V-Line Compact Pistol Safe 279-S is a small travel pistol safe from V-Line, and my choice for a suitcase, glovebox or desk drawer. It weighs 5 lb, measures 9.5 x 7.25 x 2 in plus the knob, and opens with the same Simplex lock and 1,081 combinations.
The interior is 8.5 x 6.5 x 1.5 in with foam lining, and a slot in one corner takes V-Line’s optional security cable. The listing calls it TSA compliant for checked bags.
What owners say: an r/Glocks owner found the lock housing eats so much room that fitting a pistol and spare magazine takes trial and error. A parent in r/daddit likes V-Line boxes but admits they will not stop a determined criminal.
Which American made gun safe should you get
- One or two pistols by the bed: Fort Knox Original Pistol Box PB1, bolted to the floor or nightstand.
- A drawer or closet shelf: Fort Knox Personal Pistol Box FK-PB4.
- A compact pistol in the car: Fort Knox FTK-AUTO, bolted to the vehicle.
- Two handguns in one slim case: V-Line Top Draw XD.
- Flights and road trips: V-Line Compact Pistol Safe 279-S with its cable.
- Rifles, shotguns or documents: a dealer safe from Liberty, Fort Knox, Rhino Metals or AMSEC.
What Made in USA means on a gun safe
An unqualified Made in USA claim on a gun safe means it is “all or virtually all” made in the United States, the FTC standard. That covers final assembly, all significant processing and nearly all components. A qualified claim such as “assembled in USA” or “made in USA with global materials” tells you some parts are imported.

In r/Firearms threads, owners doubt these labels; my take is that a maker naming its plant beats a flag on a box.
How to check a Made in USA gun safe claim
- Read the exact wording on the listing: “Made in USA” is a stronger claim than “assembled in USA” or “designed in USA.”
- Open the maker’s own page and look for the factory location; V-Line says the Top Draw XD is designed and manufactured in the USA, and Fort Knox says every pistol box it sells is made in the USA.
- Check that the claim covers the model you want, because some brands sell imported lines beside US-built ones.
- Ask the dealer or maker where the lock comes from; the box can be US-made with a lock sourced elsewhere.
American made long gun safes are a dealer purchase
American made long gun safes from Liberty, Fort Knox, Rhino Metals, AMSEC, Browning and Sturdy ship by freight from dealers, not as Amazon listings. On November 4, 2026 I found none of them on Amazon US.

Dean Safe, West Coast Safes and GunSafesNow list hundreds of them. Read the fire rating together with who certified it. AMSEC’s BF gun safes carry fire ratings verified by Intertek (ETL), while Liberty rates its safes with its own furnace test at 1,200°F, a factory claim rather than a lab certificate. Most carry a UL RSC burglary label, the entry-level residential rating. Our guide to safe brands compares those makers in more depth.
How to bolt down an American made pistol box
A US-made pistol box only resists theft once its pre-drilled holes are bolted to the floor, a stud or the vehicle. Here is how I’d mount any of the Fort Knox boxes:
- Empty the box and pick a spot where it is out of sight but reachable, such as a closet floor or the inside of a nightstand.
- Mark the four holes through the box, then move it aside.
- Drill pilot holes into the subfloor or a stud; in concrete, use masonry anchors rated for the bolt size.
- Set the box back, drive 3/8 in lag bolts with washers through every hole, and snug them without warping the floor of the box.
- Close the lid and pull hard on the box to confirm it does not shift.
For floors, slabs and vehicles, see our step-by-step guide on how to bolt down a safe. Renters should get written permission before drilling.
American made gun safe problems owners run into, and the fix
Most complaints about a mechanical American made gun safe come down to code changes, limited combinations, tight interiors and trust in the lock.
Locked out after changing the Simplex code
A long-time poster on The High Road notes that “when someone cannot access their handgun safe it is usually just after they purchase it and go to change the default combination.” Change the code with the lid open, test it three to five times before closing, and store the code somewhere safe away from the box.
Only about 1,000 Simplex combinations
Lucky Gunner’s guide points out the Simplex lock “only gives you about 1000 possible combinations.” That is why I’d bolt the box down and keep it out of sight, so nobody gets hours alone with it.
The gun and a spare magazine barely fit
The lock housing on the underside of the lid eats space. Compare the listed interior with your pistol, magazine and any light before buying; the PB1 has the most room, and the V-Line Compact the least.
Worry about a maker override code
After a 2023 news story about a maker sharing a customer’s code, r/Firearms owners pointed out that “many electronic locks have an override/manager code that the manufacturer may keep.” An r/Safes reply sums up the fix: “Mechanical locks only have one combo.” All five picks use a mechanical Simplex lock with no stored reset code.
How we picked these American made gun safes
I kept only US-made boxes that two or more top-ranking made-in-USA pages list and that I found as their own in-stock Amazon US listing. Fort Knox’s own site, Dean Safe, Safe and Vault Store, West Coast Safes and Pew Pew Tactical list these models; I then checked every spec on the Fort Knox or V-Line page and the Amazon listing on November 4, 2026.
I left out Sturdy’s 2436 (listed only on Sturdy’s pages), the StopBox Pro (two-packs only on Amazon) and Stealth’s UL23 (no stated country of manufacture). I read owner threads for each box and did not handle these safes myself.
Gun storage laws and your next American made gun safe step
Storage and transport rules differ by state and city, so check your state’s official firearm storage page; I don’t give legal advice. California buyers can confirm a device on the California DOJ roster of firearm safety devices.
Next, compare more no-battery boxes in our Simplex lock pistol safe picks, or see the best pistol safe guide if you are open to keypad and RFID models.
Questions safe buyers ask
Which gun safe brands are made in the USA?
Liberty Safe (Payson, Utah), Rhino Metals (Idaho), Sturdy Safe (Fresno, California), V-Line (Simi Valley, California), Fort Knox, American Security (AMSEC), Browning and ProSteel all sell safes they say are made in the USA. Check the model, not just the brand, because some makers also sell imported lines.
Does Made in USA mean every part of a gun safe is American?
Not every screw, but close. The FTC says an unqualified Made in USA claim means the product is all or virtually all made here, with final assembly and all significant processing in the US. A label like "assembled in USA from imported parts" is a qualified claim and tells you some parts come from abroad.
Can I buy an American made long gun safe on Amazon?
Rarely. On November 4, 2026 I found no Amazon US listing for a Liberty, Rhino, AMSEC or Fort Knox long gun safe. These ship by freight from dealers such as Dean Safe, West Coast Safes and GunSafesNow, often with delivery and installation offered.
Is an American made pistol box fireproof?
No. None of the five Fort Knox and V-Line boxes here carries a fire rating, and neither maker claims one. Keep passports and deeds in a safe whose fire rating names who certified it, such as UL or Intertek (ETL), or the maker for a factory test.
Are American made safes worth the price?
For a pistol box, the difference is mostly steel: the Fort Knox boxes use 10-gauge bodies and 3/16 in doors, much thicker than many imported lockboxes. You also get a lifetime warranty from a maker you can call. Whether that is worth it depends on what you store and where.
