The short answer

  • For a 2018-on Wrangler JL or Gladiator, my pick is the Tuffy Security Console Safe 348-01, a 16-gauge steel insert that keeps the factory lid and armrest; measure your console depth first.
  • For a 2011-2018 JK, the Tuffy 276-01 drops into the stock console, the Tuffy 274-01 replaces the rear half for the most room, and the Bestop 4264301 is the simplest lock box.
  • For a 1997-2000 TJ, the Tuffy 062-01 bolts through the floor (two holes to drill).
  • Every console safe guards the lid, not the plastic console walls, so treat it as smash-and-grab protection.

A Jeep Wrangler console safe turns the plastic console into a locked steel box for a Jeep parked with the doors off or a soft top. The best Jeep Wrangler console safe is the one built for your generation. For a 2018-on Jeep Wrangler JL or Jeep Gladiator, I pick the Tuffy Security Console Safe 348-01. For a Jeep Wrangler JK, the Tuffy 276-01 drops in, and the Tuffy 274-01 gives the most room. For a portable box, see our car gun safe picks.

Jeep Wrangler console safe fit by generation

A Jeep Wrangler console safe is made for one console, so the generation and model year decide the shortlist before anything else. The table compares fit, mounting and space.

None of these carries a fire rating from UL or Intertek, and none of their makers claims one. They protect against theft, not heat.

How we picked these Jeep Wrangler console safes

Each pick is recommended by at least two of the pages that rank for Jeep console safes and is sold and shipped by Amazon in the US. Two names owners also praise missed that test: Console Vault (12-gauge steel, lifetime warranty, sold direct) and Lock’er Down (its JL listing is currently unavailable). We read 35 owner reviews and forum posts, have not installed these safes ourselves, and score each with our how we score rubric.

I scored security on the welded steel and Pry-Guard latch, held back because the console walls stay plastic; access is good with the lid stop and factory armrest, and no fire claim means fire is left out.

Praised for

  • Solid build and a stock look once installed
  • A 9mm carry pistol fits inside
  • The lock and lid feel firm and smooth

Common complaints

  • Fiddly install in a tight space; owners say dry-fit it on a bench first
  • Fit problems on 2024 and some Rubicon consoles

Who it's for: JL and Gladiator owners who park with the doors or top off and want a compact pistol, wallet or phone locked out of sight; measure your console depth first, since trail-camera, Rubicon and 2024 consoles differ.

The Tuffy Security Console Safe 348-01 is a 16-gauge welded steel console safe from Tuffy Security Products for the 2018-2027 Jeep Wrangler JL and 2020-2027 Jeep Gladiator. I like that it keeps the factory armrest, tray, lid and USB port. The Pry-Guard locking system uses 1/8 in steel parts and a 10-tumbler double-bitted key, with a 3-digit combo option, and Tuffy lists over 380 cubic inches of space. It installs with hand tools and no drilling, like most of Tuffy’s truck console safes, and Mopar sells a Tuffy-made JL console safe too.

Owners call it solid, and a Gladiator owner says a 9mm fits easily. The recurring complaint is a fiddly install. A 2024 JL owner was told by Tuffy it would not fit his updated console, so I would measure first.

I gave security credit for the enclosed steel box and Pry-Guard latch; capacity is limited by the narrow interior, and no fire claim means fire is left out.

What owners and reviewers say from 4 reviews and posts we read

Praised for

  • Looks like the normal console once installed
  • Quick install (one owner reports about 35 minutes)

Common complaints

  • Only as strong as the plastic console around it, a JK owner warns

Read on: Tuffy: owner reviews on the 276-01 product page · Wrangler Forum: Best center console safe for JK

Who it's for: 2011-2018 JK owners who want the console to look stock and a small pistol or valuables locked inside; the interior is narrow, so check your holstered pistol against it.

The Tuffy Security Console Safe 276-01 is a fully enclosed 16-gauge steel console safe from Tuffy for the 2011-2018 Jeep Wrangler JK with the factory console. It drops into the stock console box, keeps the factory lid and bolts into existing holes; optional hardware drills two holes for extra hold. A Pin-Lock hinge and the Pry-Guard latch handle security.

The interior is 5 7/8 in wide and 10 in deep, narrowing from 5 3/4 in to 4 5/8 in long, so I would check a holstered pistol against it. Owners say it looks like the normal console and took about 35 minutes, though a Wrangler Forum owner warns any insert is only as strong as the plastic around it.

Tuffy Security Center Console 274-01: Most storage, a full console safe for Wrangler JK

  • Security (lock and build)8/10

  • Capacity8/10

I scored security highest for the full steel console and 1/4 in latch, capacity high for the 11 x 7.5 x 12.5 in compartment; the long install holds back value, and no fire claim means fire is left out.

Praised for

  • Feels very secure once bolted in
  • Owners who run it with matching Tuffy locks love it

Common complaints

  • Pricey and a bit of a pain to install, one owner of two JKUs says

Read on: Wrangler Forum: Best center console safe for JK

Who it's for: JK owners who carry more than a pistol (a camera, tools, documents) and want the strongest console option; it replaces the factory rear console, so expect a longer install.

The Tuffy Security Center Console 274-01 is a 16-gauge steel rear-half center console from Tuffy that replaces the plastic rear console on the 2011-2018 Jeep Wrangler JK. Tuffy says it adds 75 percent more secure storage than the factory console, and the 11 x 7.5 x 12.5 in compartment is the roomiest here. The Pry-Guard II push-button lock uses a 1/4 in steel latch, and Grade 8 hardware bolts it to the factory holes.

I would pick it for a camera or tools as well as a pistol. A Wrangler Forum owner who fitted it in two JKUs calls it pricey and a pain to install, but very secure. Amazon lists 33 lb and up to 2 hours of work.

I scored security a step below the Tuffy picks: steel box and key lock, but no named anti-pry latch; quick to install, and no fire claim means fire is left out.

Praised for

  • One owner says it stayed locked through a break-in
  • Handy for a phone and wallet during workouts

Common complaints

  • Key is hard to insert and cannot be removed while unlocked

Read on: Bestop: owner reviews on the 4264301 product page

Who it's for: JK owners who want a phone, wallet or keys locked away during a hike or workout without a big install; it is a lighter lock box, so a gun owner may prefer the Tuffy 276-01.

The Bestop Center Console Lock Box 4264301 is a 16-gauge carbon steel console lock box from Bestop for 2-door and 4-door 2011-2018 Jeep Wrangler JK models. It has a piano-hinge lid and a pick-resistant key lock, and Bestop says it installs in under an hour with no drilling.

I see it as the light option for a phone and wallet during a hike. One owner says it stayed locked through a break-in; another found the key hard to insert and stuck while unlocked. Bestop lists a 30-day guarantee, so a gun owner may prefer the Tuffy 276-01.

I scored security high because it bolts through the floor and one owner says it survived a tire-iron attack; drilling and the narrow fit window hold it back, and no fire claim means fire is left out.

What owners and reviewers say from 10 reviews and posts we read

Praised for

  • Held up when a thief used a tire iron on it, one owner says
  • Bolt holes line up and the install takes about 45 minutes to 2 hours
  • Owners report 15+ years of use

Common complaints

  • The lock cylinder sits higher and the bracket intrudes into the opening
  • Lid can lift about 1/4 in when locked

Read on: ExtremeTerrain: owner reviews of the Tuffy 062-01 · Tuffy: owner reviews on the 062-01 product page

Who it's for: 1997-2000 TJ owners with a soft top who want a locked spot for valuables; it does not fit 2001-2006 TJs and needs two holes drilled.

The Tuffy Security Console Safe 062-01 is a fully enclosed 16-gauge steel console insert from Tuffy for the 1997-2000 Jeep Wrangler TJ. It replaces the plastic insert, keeps the factory armrest and mounts through the floor, so you drill two holes. It does not fit 2001-2006 TJs.

Bolting to the floor is why I rate it high: one ExtremeTerrain owner says a thief used his tire iron on it and could not open it. Others report installs under 2 hours and 15 years of use. Complaints: the lock cylinder sits higher, and one lid lifts about 1/4 in when locked.

Which Jeep Wrangler console safe should you get

Match the console safe to your Jeep’s generation first, then to what you store.

  • 2018-on JL or Gladiator: Tuffy 348-01, after measuring console depth.
  • JK, stock look: Tuffy 276-01.

How to check your Jeep console before ordering a console safe

Measure the console depth and confirm your model year before you buy a Jeep console safe. Five minutes does it:

  1. Note your model year and trim (Rubicon, 4xe, diesel and trail-camera Jeeps can differ).
  2. Empty the console and lift out any mat.
  3. Measure from the console floor to the rim. Tuffy’s 348-01 brackets cover 8.5 in and 6.3 in consoles.
  4. Measure your holstered pistol and compare it with the lid opening, not only the box.
  5. Watch the maker’s install video below.

Jeep console safe problems owners run into, and the fix

Most Jeep console safe complaints come down to plastic walls, depth and a fiddly install.

  • It only guards the lid. On JeepGladiatorForum, one owner put it plainly: “They’re all lids with open framework going to the bottom. They’re really designed to prevent opening from the top, not to prevent forced entry through the console walls.” Fix: treat it as smash-and-grab protection and take the gun with you overnight.
  • It does not fit. A JLwranglerforums owner says trail-camera consoles are about 2.5 in shallower, and another posted that “the existing Tuffy 348-01 Console Safe will only work properly in the 2018-2023 consoles.” Fix: measure, and use the short brackets.
  • The install fights back. Fix: dry-fit the parts on a bench and keep filler-plate screws loose until the end.
  • A cable box felt too weak. An r/CCW reply sums it up: “A console safe that is attached to the vehicle is quite a bit better than a lock box with a cable.”

From our notes: The Tuffy 348-01’s fitment notice surprised me most. Two JL consoles that look the same can differ by about 2.5 inches of depth, because the trail camera or a Rubicon transfer case sits underneath. The fit complaints I read in forum threads were about depth and model year, not steel. So my first step for any JL owner is a tape measure, not a cart.

Jeep Wrangler console safe storage rules for a handgun

A Jeep Wrangler console safe makes a parked gun harder to steal, but it does not settle the law for you. Everytown’s analysis of FBI-reporting cities found gun thefts from cars rose to 63.1 per 100,000 people in 2022, and over half of gun thefts were from cars. Rules differ by state, so check your state’s official rules for guns in vehicles; our safe buying checklist covers the rest.

Questions safe buyers ask

Which console safe fits a Wrangler JL?

The Tuffy Security Console Safe 348-01 is listed for 2018-2027 Wrangler JL and 2020-2027 Gladiator. Tuffy ships brackets for 8.5 in and 6.3 in deep consoles and asks you to measure first, because trail-camera, Rubicon and 4xe consoles can be shallower. Console Vault also makes a JL safe, sold direct rather than on Amazon.

Is a Tuffy or Console Vault better for a Jeep?

Both are welded steel inserts that keep the stock console look. Console Vault lists 12-gauge steel, four lock options and a lifetime warranty, but it sells direct. The Tuffy 348-01 uses 16-gauge steel with a Pry-Guard latch and is sold and shipped by Amazon; Mopar also sells a Tuffy-made JL console safe. One JL owner on JLwranglerforums preferred Console Vault's fit and materials.

Do Jeep console safes need drilling?

Most do not. Tuffy says the 348-01 and 276-01 install with hand tools into existing holes, Bestop says the 4264301 uses existing hardware, and the 274-01 bolts to the factory holes. The TJ 062-01 needs two holes drilled because it mounts through the floor.

Will a pistol fit in a Jeep console safe?

A compact or subcompact pistol usually fits. A JL owner with a Lock'er Down console safe reports his S&W Shield 9mm fits with no issues, while a full-size 1911 needs twisting to get in and out. Check the lid opening as well as the box size: Console Vault's JL opening is 4.5 x 5.25 in.

Is a console safe enough to leave a gun in a Jeep?

It stops a quick grab through an open or soft-top Jeep, but the console walls are still plastic, so it is not a substitute for taking the gun inside. Storage and transport rules vary by state, so check your state's official firearm storage rules for vehicles.
