The short answer
- Best overall under $500: the SentrySafe SFW123GDC, UL Classified for 1 hour at up to 1700°F, ETL verified for water, with a keypad and backup key.
- Need more room or no batteries: the 2 cu ft SentrySafe SFW205CWB (dial, 124.8 lb), the SFW123DSB dial version, or the First Alert 2087F.
- Theft only, a handgun or rifles: the Amazon Basics steel safe bolted down, the Viking VS-20BLX, the Hornady RAPiD Safe Night Guard or the Barska biometric rifle safe. None of these four makes a fire claim.
- No safe under $500 carries a real burglary rating plus fire protection, so bolt down whatever you buy and pair a fire box with a steel safe if you need both.
On r/Firearms, a buyer shopping for a safe under $500 asked whether the big-name safes were worth more, and one reply pointed out that many of them “are just RSC rated like the cheaper safes.” That is the honest starting point. The best home safe under $500 for most homes is the SentrySafe SFW123GDC: it carries an independent UL fire rating, an ETL water rating and enough bolt work to slow a casual thief once it is bolted down. I sorted nine more picks by what you actually store: papers, cash and jewelry, a handgun by the bed, or long guns. If your budget stretches further, compare these with my best home safe picks without a price cap.
Best home safe under $500 – the short answer
Buy a UL fire-rated safe for papers and valuables, a bolted steel safe for theft only, and a quick-access safe for a handgun. Every pick below was in stock on Amazon US under $500 when I checked in October 2026.

- Best large fire safe: SentrySafe SFW205CWB, 2 cu ft, dial, 124.8 lb.
- Best battery-free: SentrySafe SFW123DSB, same body as my top pick with a dial.
- Second brand: First Alert 2087F, UL 1 hour, dial and override keys.
- Theft only: Amazon Basics Steel Home Security Electronic Safe, bolted down.
- Small and fast: Viking VS-20BLX fingerprint safe.
- Bedside handgun: Hornady RAPiD Safe Night Guard.
- Long guns: Barska Biometric Rifle Safe.
- Papers only: SentrySafe HD4100 file box or the smaller CHW20221 chest.
Home safes under $500 compared
The table puts each pick’s certified fire rating, lock, room and weight side by side. Weight matters because a light safe that isn’t anchored simply leaves with the burglar.

| Safe | Fire rating (who says so) | Water rating | Lock | Interior | Weight |

| SentrySafe SFW123GDC | 1 hr, 1700°F (UL) | 24 hr, 8 in (ETL) | Keypad + key | 1.23 cu ft | 86.69 lb |

SentrySafe SFW123GDC: Best overall home safe under $500

3.6Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)6/10
- Fire protection8/10
- Access (speed and ease)8/10
- Capacity7/10
- Value8/10
I scored fire and access high for the independent UL and ETL ratings and a fast keypad; I held security at 6 because there is no burglary rating, and took off for battery reliance and the delivery dents owners report.
What we like
- UL Classified 1 hour at up to 1700°F and ETL verified water resistance
- Live-locking bolts, pry-resistant hinge bar and bolt-down hardware
- Locking drawer, key rack and interior light; owners like the room for folders
What we don't like
- Several Walmart owners received it dented, and a few report keypad or key trouble
- No burglary rating, and the keypad depends on batteries
What owners and reviewers say review themes from 1,991 owner reviews, plus 16 posts and reviews we read
Praised for
- Plenty of room for document folders, with a useful locking drawer
- Easy to program a code, and the interior light helps
Common complaints
- Several Walmart reviewers describe a safe that arrived dented or damaged
- A few owners on SentrySafe's review page report trouble opening it with the code or key
- One owner's 3-ring binder only fits standing up

Who it's for: Households with passports, deeds, cash and backup drives that want fire, water and basic theft protection in one box; it has no burglary rating and weighs about 87 lb, so plan where it goes.
I put this safe first because its fire rating comes from a lab, not a brochure. SentrySafe lists it as UL Classified for 1 hour in up to 1700°F, and Intertek’s ETL mark covers 24 hours in 8 inches of water. Live-locking bolts, a pry-resistant hinge bar and bolt-down hardware give it basic theft resistance once anchored.
Inside are 1.23 cubic feet (13.8 x 12.6 x 11.9 in), a locking drawer, a key rack and a light. The keypad has a secondary key. At 86.69 lb it takes two people to place.
Walmart owners like the room for folders and the drawer. The recurring complaint is delivery: several describe a safe that arrived dented, and a few on SentrySafe’s own page report trouble opening it with the code or key. My advice is to inspect it on arrival and keep the key and spare batteries outside the safe.
SentrySafe SFW205CWB: Best large fire safe

3.7Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)7/10
- Fire protection8/10
- Access (speed and ease)6/10
- Capacity9/10
- Value8/10
I gave it top capacity and the best security score of the fire safes here for six bolts and the most weight; access loses points because a dial is slower than a keypad.
What we like
- UL Classified 1 hour at up to 1700°F and ETL verified 24 hours in 8 inches of water
- Six 1-inch live-locking bolts, the most bolt work on my list
- Dial lock needs no batteries
What we don't like
- 124.8 lb and 23.8 in tall, so placement takes planning
- Two owners report shipping damage, and dial entry is slower than a keypad
What owners and reviewers say review themes from 353 owner reviews, plus 3 posts and reviews we read
Praised for
- The door swings easily and locking feels easier than on the 1.2 cu ft SentrySafe
- A big dial with large, clear numbers
Common complaints
- Two owners report shipping damage, one cosmetic and one unit that arrived damaged
Read on: SentrySafe owner reviews: SFW205CWB (353 reviews)
Who it's for: Families who need binders, a laptop, hard drives and jewelry boxes in one place; it is 23.8 in tall, needs room for the door to swing and takes two people to move.
When binders, a laptop and jewelry boxes won’t fit in 1.2 cubic feet, this is the step up I’d take. It carries the same UL 1-hour and ETL water ratings, with a 19.6 x 14.8 x 11.9 in interior (2 cubic feet). SentrySafe lists six 1-inch live-locking bolts, the most bolt work on my list.
Its weight is the quiet advantage. At 124.8 lb it is the only pick here over 100 lb, so a thief can’t tuck it under an arm. The dial needs no batteries.
Owners on SentrySafe’s page like how easily the door swings and the big, clear dial numbers. Two reported shipping damage. Measure your closet first: it stands 23.8 inches tall.
SentrySafe SFW123DSB: Best battery-free home safe

3.4Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)6/10
- Fire protection8/10
- Access (speed and ease)6/10
- Capacity7/10
- Value8/10
I scored it level with the keypad version on fire and capacity; I took access down because owners call the dial slow and fussy, and it has no burglary rating.
What we like
- UL Classified 1 hour at 1700°F and ETL verified 24 hours in 8 inches of water
- Dial plus key lock, nothing to power
- Live-locking bolts, a pry-resistant hinge bar and bolt-down hardware
What we don't like
- Owners at Walmart and Home Depot say the dial often takes several tries
- Interior collects moisture without a desiccant, a common owner warning
What owners and reviewers say from 9 reviews and posts we read
Praised for
- Solid, heavy build that feels secure for the money
- Enough room for papers plus valuables, with a shelf
Common complaints
- The combination dial often needs several attempts to open
- Moisture and even corrosion inside without a desiccant
Read on: Walmart customer reviews: SentrySafe SFW123DSB · Home Depot reviews: SentrySafe SFW123CS 1.2 cu ft dial safe · Best Buy customer reviews: SentrySafe SFW123DSB
Who it's for: Owners who open the safe a few times a year and worry about dead batteries; the dial is slow, and owners often need a few tries.
This is my top pick with the electronics removed. It shares the 1.23 cubic foot body, the UL Classified 1-hour rating at 1700°F and the ETL water rating, but it opens with a dial combination plus a key. Nothing inside it can die while the safe sits untouched for a year.
The trade-off is speed. Owners at Walmart and Home Depot often say the dial takes several tries, so practice before you load it. Several also warn about moisture building up inside without a desiccant, which I cover below. I’d choose the SentrySafe SFW123DSB over the keypad model if you open it a few times a year.
First Alert 2087F: Best fire safe from a second brand

3.1Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)6/10
- Fire protection7/10
- Access (speed and ease)5/10
- Capacity6/10
- Value7/10
I like its UL 1-hour rating and battery-free dial; fire sits a notch under the SentrySafes because its water claim has no lab behind it, and access drops for a fiddly combination.
What we like
- UL Classified for 1 hour at up to 1700°F, interior kept under 350°F
- Mechanical dial needs no batteries and comes with override keys
What we don't like
- Owners on Walmart say the combination takes practice before it opens reliably
- Waterproof claim is First Alert's own, with no named lab
- One owner says burglars forced theirs open
What owners and reviewers say review themes from 104 owner reviews, plus 14 posts and reviews we read
Praised for
- Plenty of room for documents and valuables for the money
- Owners like that it is not digital, and that keys give quick access
Common complaints
- The combination takes practice before it opens reliably
- A unit that arrived damaged and a slow return
- One owner says burglars forced it open, so it is not theft protection
Read on: Walmart customer reviews: First Alert 2087F (104 reviews) · First Alert Safes customer reviews: 2087F-BD
Who it's for: Buyers who want a battery-free fire safe from another brand for papers and cash; the combination takes practice, and it is pry resistant, not burglary rated.
If you’d rather not buy SentrySafe, the 2087F is the fire safe I’d look at next. First Alert lists it as UL Classified for 1 hour at 1700°F, holding the inside below 350°F. A mechanical dial with override keys means no batteries.
Its water claim is First Alert’s own, with no lab named, which is why I scored fire a notch below the SentrySafes. The interior is 0.94 cubic feet.
Walmart owners like the room and the fact that it isn’t digital. The repeated complaint is the combination, which takes practice. One owner says burglars forced theirs open, a reminder that pry resistance is not a burglary rating. The First Alert 2087F suits papers and cash in a closet.
Amazon Basics Steel Home Security Electronic Safe: Best budget theft deterrent

3.3Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)5/10
- Access (speed and ease)7/10
- Capacity7/10
- Value9/10
No fire claim, so I left fire out. I rated value highest for thick door steel and room at a low cost, and held security at 5 for a light body with no burglary rating.
What we like
- 8-gauge steel door and 14-gauge body with 2 live door bolts, per the listing
- Keypad plus backup key, and mounting holes with hardware included
- Roomy 1.2 cu ft interior with a shelf
What we don't like
- No fire or water rating, and light enough to carry off unless anchored
- One owner write-up reports a door that rubs and a missing anchor bolt
What owners and reviewers say from 2 reviews and posts we read
Praised for
- Solid enough to keep kids and casual snoops out, for little money
- Easy keypad programming with a quiet option
Common complaints
- Door rubs on the frame and is noisy when opened
- Not high security; owners stress bolting it down
Read on: Top Firearm Reviews: Amazon Basics owner notes · r/carverscave: Amazon Basics Steel Safe Review
Who it's for: Budget buyers keeping cash, jewelry or a handgun away from kids, guests and casual thieves; it makes no fire or water claim, so papers inside need their own fire box.
This is the pick when fire is not your worry. The listing for the 1.2 cubic foot size gives an 8-gauge steel door, a 14-gauge body, 2 live door bolts and concealed hinges. Steel gauge runs backwards: a lower number means thicker steel, so the door is the strong part.
What I like is the anchoring kit. It comes with pre-drilled holes and hardware, and at 29.3 lb it needs them. Unbolted, it is a box someone carries out.
Owners describe it as solid enough to keep kids and casual snoops out. One owner write-up reports a door that rubs on the frame and a missing anchor bolt. Pair the Amazon Basics safe with a fire box if you keep papers too.
Viking Security Safe VS-20BLX: Best small biometric safe

2.7Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)4/10
- Access (speed and ease)9/10
- Capacity3/10
- Value6/10
No fire claim, so I left fire out. I gave access a 9 for three ways in, but light steel and a lock shown opened quickly hold security back, and the box is small.
What we like
- Fingerprint, PIN and key; prints stay in memory if batteries are removed
- Interior LED light, carpeted floor and 4 anchor bolts included
What we don't like
- Its lock has been shown opened quickly on video, and Walmart reviewers repeat that worry
- Small interior, about 0.4 cu ft from the maker's inside dimensions
What owners and reviewers say review themes from 5 owner reviews, plus 5 posts and reviews we read
Praised for
- Fingerprint and code both open it reliably, per two reviewers
- Feels like a hotel-style safe
Common complaints
- One reviewer had locking bolts that would not fully retract
- Changing batteries means removing the LED unit with a screwdriver
Read on: Walmart customer reviews: Viking VS-20BLX (5 reviews)
Who it's for: Someone who wants a passport, jewelry or a small handgun within seconds in a closet or bedroom; it holds about 0.4 cu ft and is lightly built, so bolt it down.
The VS-20BLX is my pick for a passport, jewelry or a small handgun you reach for often. It opens by fingerprint (32 stored), a 4-8 digit PIN or an override key, and Viking says prints stay in memory when the batteries come out. A motorized deadbolt, an LED light and four anchor bolts round it out.
It is small. From Viking’s inside dimensions (7.8 x 11.9 x 7.6 in) I worked out about 0.4 cubic feet. At 18 lb, it must be bolted down.
Two Walmart reviewers say fingerprint and code both work reliably; one had bolts that would not fully retract. Its lock has also been shown opened quickly on video, so I treat the Viking VS-20BLX as a privacy box, not a vault.
Hornady RAPiD Safe Night Guard: Best bedside handgun safe

3.4Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)7/10
- Access (speed and ease)8/10
- Capacity5/10
- Value7/10
No fire claim, so I left fire out. I gave security a 7 for a key backup and a California DOJ listing, access an 8 for RFID entry held back by the flush keypad, and capacity a 5 because it fits one handgun.
What we like
- RFID tag, code and mechanical key; four RFID tags included (Hornady)
- Pre-drilled mounting holes and a 1,500 lb-rated security cable
- Two USB-A charging ports and AAA battery backup
What we don't like
- The flush keypad is hard to feel in the dark, so the RFID tag is the fast route
- One Reddit owner reports two Hornady units failing within two years
What owners and reviewers say from 1 review and posts we read
Praised for
- Fast RFID entry and several ways in
Common complaints
- One Reddit poster says two Hornady units failed within 2 years
Read on: Reddit r/tacticalgear: Bedside gun with little kids (search excerpt only)
Who it's for: Someone who keeps one handgun by the bed and wants hands-free RFID entry; the flush keypad is hard to feel in the dark, it makes no fire claim, and the drawer holds a handgun, not documents.
For one handgun by the bed, I’d take this alarm-clock-style drawer safe. It opens with an RFID tag on a wrist band or key fob, a code, or a mechanical key, and Hornady includes four tags. It runs on AC power with four AAA batteries as backup, has two USB-A ports and ships with a 1,500 lb-rated security cable.
Hornady lists it as a California DOJ approved firearm safety device; your state’s storage rules may differ, so check them. The flush keypad is hard to feel in the dark, so the RFID tag is the fast route.
One Reddit owner reports two Hornady units failing within two years. My Night Guard pick sits beside our nightstand handgun safe guide, which compares it with keypad and biometric boxes.
Barska Biometric Rifle Safe: Best for long guns

2.9Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)5/10
- Access (speed and ease)6/10
- Capacity7/10
- Value6/10
No fire claim, so I left fire out. I rated it as the only long-gun pick with big fingerprint memory, and kept access and value middling for owner reports of a slow reader and a tight fit.
What we like
- Stores up to 120 fingerprints for a whole household
- Three-point deadbolt, backup keys and an emergency battery pack
What we don't like
- Owners report a slow reader and a tight fit for scoped rifles
- One owner found the auxiliary battery connector did not work
What owners and reviewers say from 4 reviews and posts we read
Praised for
- Biometric reader is convenient for a closet rifle cabinet
Common complaints
- Reader can be slow to recognize a finger
- Scoped or cased rifles fit poorly; the shelf only adjusts for short rifles
Read on: Barska Quick Access Biometric Rifle Safe at B&H · Barska biometric rifle safe owner review (eBay) · Barska Biometric Rifle Safe review summary (ShopSavvy)
Who it's for: Quick-access storage for a few rifles or shotguns in a closet; owners say scoped or cased rifles fit poorly, it makes no fire claim and at about 62 lb it must be anchored.
If rifles or shotguns are what you store, this is my long-gun pick, mainly for its fingerprint memory and backup options. The Barska AX11652 holds up to four rifles, stores up to 120 fingerprints and locks with a three-point deadbolt. Backup keys and a plug-in emergency battery pack cover a dead battery.
The interior is 51.75 x 9.7 x 6.3 inches. Owners say scoped or cased rifles fit poorly, so measure your longest gun with its optic. At about 62 lb, anchor it through its mounting holes. Barska lists it as California DOJ approved for storage.
Owners report a reader that can be slow to recognize a finger, and one found the battery connector dead. It makes no fire claim. The Barska Biometric Rifle Safe is a locked closet for long guns, not a fire safe.
SentrySafe HD4100: Best file box for papers

3.0Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)3/10
- Fire protection6/10
- Access (speed and ease)8/10
- Capacity6/10
- Value9/10
I rated its 30-minute UL fire rating and 72-hour ETL water rating well for the money; security stays low for a privacy lock, and owners flag the latch.
What we like
- UL Classified for 1/2 hour at up to 1550°F
- ETL Verified for 72 hours of water submersion
- Light enough (about 39 lb) to grab in an evacuation
What we don't like
- Plastic latch and lid draw breakage complaints from Walmart owners
- Privacy key lock is not theft protection
What owners and reviewers say from 6 reviews and posts we read
Praised for
- Sturdy, well-made box at an affordable price
- Right size for a household's file folders
Common complaints
- Cheap-feeling latch and a lid that is hard to push down
- Units arriving damaged in thin packaging
Read on: Walmart customer reviews: SentrySafe HD4100 · Walmart customer reviews: SentrySafe HD4100 Charcoal Gray · ShopSavvy review summary: SentrySafe HD4100
Who it's for: Renters and homeowners with letter-size files who want flood protection on top of a 30-minute UL fire rating; the key lock only keeps out curious hands.
For letter-size files, I’d pick this box over a chest. SentrySafe rates it UL Classified for 30 minutes at up to 1550°F, and ETL verifies it for 72 hours under water, tied with the CHW20221 for the longest water rating on my list. Inside are 0.65 cubic feet, sized for hanging folders.
At about 39 lb you can grab it in an evacuation, which also means a thief can. The key lock keeps out curious hands, nothing more.
Walmart owners call it sturdy for the money and the right size for household files. Complaints center on a cheap-feeling latch and units arriving damaged. The SentrySafe HD4100 is the pick when a flood worries you as much as a fire.
SentrySafe CHW20221: Best budget fire chest

2.5Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)2/10
- Fire protection6/10
- Access (speed and ease)7/10
- Capacity3/10
- Value9/10
I value its real UL and ETL ratings at the lowest cost here; I scored security and capacity down for a privacy lock and a box that holds papers flat.
What we like
- UL Classified 1/2 hour at 1550°F and ETL verified flood protection for 72 hours
- Compact chest slides under a bed or onto a shelf
- Easy to grab in an evacuation
What we don't like
- 0.28 cu ft holds papers flat, not binders
- Tubular key lock is a privacy latch
What owners and reviewers say review themes from 105 owner reviews, plus 3 posts and reviews we read
Praised for
- Plenty of space for its size
- A grab-and-go box for key papers
Common complaints
- One owner reported the key would not fully enter the lock
- The tubular key lock will not stop a pry bar
Read on: SentrySafe owner reviews: CHW20221 (105 reviews) · Pickstead: SentrySafe CHW20221 review
Who it's for: Anyone on a tight budget who needs to protect a handful of irreplaceable papers; it carries easily, so a thief can carry it too.
This is my lowest-cost pick with a real fire rating. SentrySafe lists it as UL Classified for 1/2 hour up to 1550°F, with ETL-verified flood protection for up to 72 hours. It weighs 20.4 lb.
The interior is 4.4 x 12.8 x 8.5 inches, 0.28 cubic feet: passports, birth certificates and a little cash lying flat, not binders.
Owners value it as a grab-and-go box; one reported a key that would not fully enter the lock. Keep the SentrySafe CHW20221 out of sight, since a burglar can carry it off.
What a home safe under $500 can and can’t stop
A safe under $500 stops kids, guests and a quick grab; it does not stop a prepared burglar, and none of my picks carries a UL burglary rating. Even UL’s entry Residential Security Container label, the one many big-brand gun safes carry, only requires the safe to withstand a five-minute attack by one technician with common hand tools.

That is why the r/Firearms reply stings: past that label, much of what you pay for is size and finish. Under $500, three things do the security work:
- Weight. Only the SFW205CWB passes 100 lb. Six of my ten picks weigh under 65 lb.
- Anchoring. Bolting a light safe to the floor or studs does more than any brand name. Our guide on how to bolt down a safe covers floors and walls.
- Hiding it. A closet corner beats a bedroom floor in plain sight.
Buyers in r/Safes keep asking whether one home safe can stop both fire and burglars. Under $500, not well: fire safes are built around insulation, while burglary-rated safes are a separate, pricier class. The workable plan is a bolted steel safe for cash and guns, plus a fire box or fire safe for papers.
Fire ratings on budget home safes, and who certified them
Six of my ten picks carry a UL Classified fire rating, and the label tells you the minutes and the temperature. The rest make no fire claim at all, which is honest.

- UL 1 hour at 1700°F: SFW123GDC, SFW123DSB, SFW205CWB and First Alert 2087F.
- UL 30 minutes at 1550°F: SentrySafe HD4100 and CHW20221.
- No fire claim: Amazon Basics, Viking VS-20BLX, Hornady Night Guard and Barska.
Water ratings split the same way. Intertek’s ETL mark covers 24 hours in 8 inches of water for the three SentrySafe safes and 72 hours for the two SentrySafe boxes; First Alert’s water claim names no lab. Paper ratings protect paper. Backup drives and USB sticks fail at lower temperatures, so wrap them in a sealed bag and ask the maker about media ratings. The video below, from SentrySafe, explains its fire protection and testing standards.
Which home safe under $500 fits what you store
Pick by what goes inside, then check it fits. This is the decision rule I’d use:
| What you store | My pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Papers only | SentrySafe HD4100 or CHW20221 | UL fire plus 72-hour ETL water rating |
| Papers, cash and jewelry | SentrySafe SFW123GDC or SFW123DSB | UL 1 hour, bolts, room for folders |
| Binders, laptop, family documents | SentrySafe SFW205CWB | 2 cu ft and 124.8 lb |
| Cash and valuables, theft only | Amazon Basics, bolted down | Thick door, mounting kit |
| One handgun by the bed | Hornady Night Guard or Viking VS-20BLX | RFID or fingerprint entry |
| Rifles or shotguns | Barska Biometric Rifle Safe | Up to 4 rifles, 120 prints |
If you’re afraid of a dead keypad, five picks open with a dial or key only: SFW123DSB, SFW205CWB, 2087F, HD4100 and CHW20221.
Home safe problems owners run into, and the fix
Most complaints about budget home safes come down to damp, lockouts and safes that were never anchored.
- Mold inside a fire safe. On the Collectors Universe forum one owner wrote, “Fireproof safes are notorious for holding moisture.” The insulation releases damp air into a closed box. Add a rechargeable desiccant and open the safe now and then; our guide to safe dehumidifiers compares options.
- A lost or forgotten backup key. In r/Safes lockout threads, a missing override key is what turns a dead battery into a locksmith call. Keep the key and spare batteries outside the safe, and register the safe with its maker. For keypad lockouts, see our SentrySafe battery replacement steps.
- A light safe that walks off. Owners in r/homedefense call budget safes “not really fireproof, but if you bolt them down they are reasonably secure against most casual theft attempts.” Use the anchor holes.
- Delivery damage. Several picks draw dented-on-arrival reports. Inspect before you sign, and know that the maker sets the warranty terms.
How we picked these home safes under $500
I listed every safe the top-ranking pages for this search and its close variants recommend, kept those named by at least two, then kept only models in stock on Amazon US under $500. The pages included American Firearms’ budget gun safe list, Top Firearm Reviews’ home safe roundup, Business Insider, CNN Underscored, Bob Vila and several fireproof-safe guides. Safes named on only one page, such as Hornady’s 95407 fireproof safe and Langger’s own models, were left out.
We have not used these safes ourselves. The facts come from maker spec pages, listings and 63 owner reviews and posts I read on Walmart, Home Depot, SentrySafe’s site, Reddit and retailer pages. Each pick is scored on our how we score rubric, with fire left out for the four that make no fire claim.
From our notes: The SentrySafe SFW205CWB weighs 124.8 lb and the Amazon Basics safe 29.3 lb, and that gap shaped this list more than any feature. We set every pick’s weight beside its fire label and its lock. Only one safe cleared 100 lb, and six came in under 65 lb. That is why anchoring advice runs through every review here, and why the Amazon Basics pick carries the line “bolted down” in our chooser rather than a bigger claim than its steel can back up.
Our verdict on the best home safe under $500
For most homes, the SentrySafe SFW123GDC is the best home safe under $500; pick the SFW205CWB for more room or the SFW123DSB to avoid batteries. Back to that r/Firearms buyer: under $500, the label that matters is the fire rating and who certified it, and the security comes from bolting the safe down. If a handgun or rifles are the main reason you’re shopping, our best pistol safe picks go deeper, and our brand-by-brand rating guide shows who certifies what.
Questions safe buyers ask
What is the best home safe under $500?
For most homes I pick the SentrySafe SFW123GDC: it is UL Classified for 1 hour at up to 1700°F, ETL verified for 24 hours in 8 inches of water, opens by keypad or key and comes with bolt-down hardware. If you need more room or no batteries, the SFW205CWB is the larger dial version.
Can a safe under $500 stop a burglar?
It stops kids, guests and a quick grab, not a prepared thief. None of my picks carries a UL burglary rating; even UL's entry Residential Security Container label only requires surviving a five-minute attack by one person with hand tools. Bolting the safe down matters more than the brand.
Is a fireproof safe under $500 really fire rated?
Some are. Check who certified it: six of my ten picks carry a UL Classified fire rating, either 1 hour at 1700°F or 30 minutes at 1550°F. A temperature with no lab named is the maker's own claim.
Should I buy a dial or a keypad safe?
A keypad opens faster; a dial never needs batteries. If you open the safe daily, take the SFW123GDC keypad; if it sits closed for months, the SFW123DSB or SFW205CWB dial avoids a dead-battery lockout.
Can one safe under $500 hold documents and a handgun?
A 1.2 cubic foot fire safe such as the SFW123GDC can hold both, but it is slow to reach at night. Many owners keep papers in a fire safe and one handgun in a quick-access bedside safe. Check your state's firearm storage rules either way.
Why you can trust this guide
- Products are checked against manufacturer specifications, user manuals and long-term owner reports.
- Each pick is scored on the Best Safe Score: security (lock and build), fire protection, access, capacity and value. Scores come from published specs, independent ratings and owner reports, not hands-on testing.
