LaGard 700 Series Basic
3.2/5 Best Safe Score (how we score)
My pick for a simple lit keypad: dormakaba's LA GARD 700 Basic is a UL Type 1, two-user lock (manager and user) with a backlit keypad, a dual-handed swingbolt and a low battery warning.

Who it's for
- Best two-user keypad with a backlit keypad in Best Gun Safe Lock Replacement – 5 Retrofit Locks for Your Own Safe: For an owner who opens the safe in a dim closet and needs one or two codes; it runs on two 9V batteries, and older LA GARD keypads drew failure reports from owners.
What we like
- Backlit keypad, 6-digit codes, low and critical battery warnings (dormakaba)
- UL 2058 Type 1 and VdS Class 2 listed (dormakaba factsheet)
- Dual-handed swingbolt or deadbolt body; this kit is the swingbolt
What to know first
- High Road owners report failed keypads on 2006-era LA GARD locks (older models)
- Takes two 9V batteries and holds only two codes
