Our top picks
Best drawer for several guns · 3.3/5SnapSafe Under Bed Safe Large
Fastest no-touch entry · 3.5/5Hornady RAPiD Safe AR Gun Locker
Best slim box for one long gun · 3.4/5SecureIt Fast Box Model 47
The short answer
- The SnapSafe Under Bed Safe Large is our pick for most beds: a 6 in tall, 14-gauge steel drawer that holds a carbine or several handguns, with code and override-key entry.
- The Hornady RAPiD Safe AR Gun Locker opens fastest with an RFID wristband or fob, but it needs 6.75 in of clearance.
- The SecureIt Fast Box Model 47 is a slim 14-gauge box for one long gun, listed as California DOJ approved.
- None of the three has a fire rating, so measure your bed, anchor the safe and keep the backup keys outside it.
One r/homedefense poster measured the gap and wrote: “We have a bed frame that has 4.25” of clearance underneath. it doesn’t leave a lot of room for a gun safe.” (thread) That is the first test for any under bed gun safe: its height decides whether it fits before the lock or the steel matter. The best under bed gun safe for most homes is the SnapSafe Under Bed Safe Large, a 6 in tall, 14-gauge steel drawer that holds a carbine or several handguns. The Hornady RAPiD Safe AR Gun Locker opens fastest with a touch-free RFID tag, and the SecureIt Fast Box Model 47 is the slim welded box for one long gun. None of the three has a fire rating.
Our under bed gun safe picks
An under bed gun safe should fit the gap under your bed frame, open by feel in the dark and anchor to something a burglar can’t easily carry off. We picked the three models that independent roundups and forum owners recommend most and still sell on Amazon US, then checked each against the maker’s specs, manuals and owner reports.

SnapSafe Under Bed Safe Large: Best drawer for several guns

3.3Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)6/10
- Access (speed and ease)6/10
- Capacity8/10
- Value7/10
No fire claim, so fire is left out. Security 6 for 14-gauge steel and a pry-resistant door with no independent burglary rating; access 6 because the keypad beeps, is not backlit and needs a knob turn; capacity 8 for a wide drawer that takes a carbine or several pistols; value 7 with the cable, keys and lifetime warranty included.
What we like
- Wide slide-out drawer (37 x 20 x 4.5 in inside per SnapSafe's manual) holds a 16 in AR with an adjustable stock, per The Firearm Blog's owner review
- 14-gauge steel, pry-resistant door, pre-drilled holes and a 5 ft cable for renters who cannot bolt down
- 3-8 digit code (two codes can be stored) plus two override keys behind a hidden cover; SnapSafe's lifetime warranty covers defects
What we don't like
- Keypad beeps on every press and is not backlit, so a dark bedroom means feeling for buttons (The Firearm Blog owner review)
- Usable drawer length is about 19 in because the lock mechanism and steel rods intrude, so long guns lie diagonally; at 105 lb it is a two-person lift
What owners and reviewers say from 3 reviews and posts we read
Praised for
- Fits a 16 in AR with an adjustable stock or a folding-stock rifle in the drawer
- Low-battery warning and an override key, with an owner running two for over a year without a problem
Common complaints
- The keypad beeps on every press with no mute, and it is not backlit
- Inside height and usable length are smaller than the outside size suggests, so long guns go in diagonally

Who it's for: For someone who wants a carbine, a shotgun or several handguns in one pull-out drawer under a bed with at least 6 in of clearance; the drawer is only about 4.5 in deep inside, the keypad beeps and is not backlit, and there is no fire rating.
This slide-out drawer is the roomiest pick and the one we’d choose for a mixed load of long guns, handguns and documents. SnapSafe lists it at 40 in wide, 22 in deep and 6 in tall, built from 14-gauge steel with a pry-resistant door, pre-drilled holes and a 5 ft security cable. The manual gives 37 x 20 x 4.5 in inside. An owner at The Firearm Blog measured about 4.25 in of drawer height and 19 in of usable length, because the lock mechanism and two steel rods intrude. His 16 in AR with an adjustable stock fit comfortably, while longer rifles went in diagonally.
Entry is a 3-8 digit code (you can store two) or one of two override keys behind a hidden cover, and a knob turn opens the drawer. That same owner flags what matters at 3 a.m.: the keypad beeps on every press with no mute, and it isn’t backlit. A SIG Talk owner who runs one on each side of the bed reports more than a year without trouble, plus a low-battery warning. At 105 lb it is a two-person job to place. The SnapSafe Under Bed Safe Large also comes as a 5 in tall Medium for lower frames.
Hornady RAPiD Safe AR Gun Locker: Fastest no-touch entry

3.5Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)6/10
- Access (speed and ease)9/10
- Capacity6/10
- Value7/10
No fire claim, so fire is left out. Security 6 for 16-gauge steel with four hardened lugs and a California DOJ listing, but thinner steel and no independent burglary rating; access 9 for touch-free RFID plus keypad and keys, held back a point by the battery-mode wake-up press; capacity 6 for up to two long guns in a 5.5 in deep interior; value 7 with wall power, tags and cable included.
What we like
- RFID wristband, key fob or decals open it without a code; keypad and two barrel keys back it up (Hornady manual)
- 16-gauge steel with four internal hardened locking lugs (Hornady) and a 1,500 lb rated security cable (Amazon listing)
- Runs on the included wall power supply or 4 AA batteries, with a keypad tone you can switch off (Hornady manual)
What we don't like
- On battery power you must press a lid button to wake the reader before the RFID tag works, and Hornady will not send replacement keys (Hornady manual)
- An owner on Reddit says the foam pads that hold the guns in place are weak; at 6.75 in tall it needs more clearance than the other picks
What owners and reviewers say from 2 reviews and posts we read
Praised for
- Owners like the RFID (touch-free) opening
- An XL buyer on Reddit calls it a great product so far
Common complaints
- The foam pads that keep the guns in place are weak, per one owner on Reddit

Who it's for: For a home-defense AR or shotgun staged under the bed for the fastest touch-free opening; it needs 6.75 in of clearance, runs on wall power or 4 AA batteries, and Hornady says it is not meant to protect against fire, water or humidity.
This 42 in locker is built around one job: getting a home defense AR-15 or shotgun out fast. Hold the included RFID wristband, key fob or decal within an inch of the lid and it opens; a keypad and two circular barrel keys back that up, per Hornady’s manual. The body is 16-gauge steel with four internal hardened locking lugs, and the Amazon listing adds a 1,500 lb rated cable. It runs on the included 12V wall supply or four AA batteries. The manual flags a catch: on batteries, you press a lid button to wake the reader before the tag works.
You can switch the keypad tones off, which helps next to a sleeping partner. At 6.75 in tall outside and 5.5 in inside, it needs the most clearance of the three. Hornady’s product page lists 50 lb (the manual says 55 lb), and Hornady shows it as California DOJ approved. An r/liberalgunowners owner loves the RF opening but calls the foam pads that hold the guns weak. Hornady won’t send replacement keys, so store yours somewhere safe outside the locker. Gun University names the Hornady RAPiD Safe AR Gun Locker its Editor’s Choice for under the bed.
SecureIt Fast Box Model 47: Best slim box for one long gun

3.4Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)7/10
- Access (speed and ease)8/10
- Capacity5/10
- Value7/10
No fire claim, so fire is left out. Security 7 for 14-gauge welded steel, 3-point locking and a California DOJ listing, without an independent burglary rating; access 8 for a backlit keypad, fingerprint and keys, minus a point for no clear button; capacity 5 because it takes one long gun lying flat; value 7 with mounting hardware, stock base and cradles included.
What we like
- 14-gauge welded steel, 3-point locking and a full-length piano hinge (SecureIt)
- Backlit 4-digit keypad, capacitive fingerprint scanner, USB-C power port and two override keys; SecureIt says there are no third-party backdoors
- Works flat under a bed or upright in a closet, with pre-drilled holes and hardware; listed as California DOJ approved by SecureIt
What we don't like
- Holds one long gun lying flat (up to 46.5 in); two only when stood upright
- An owner on Reddit misses a start-over button for a mistyped code, and the fingerprint version is new, with little owner history yet
What owners and reviewers say from 4 reviews and posts we read
Praised for
- Mounts to a metal bed frame and holds a short shotgun, an AR pistol and several handguns, per a SIG Talk owner
- Works under the bed or standing in a closet, holding two long guns and two pistols for one Reddit owner
Common complaints
- No start-over button on the keypad when you mistype a code
- Shipping direct from SecureIt is expensive, per one Washington owner

(search excerpt only) · Reddit r/liberalgunowners: Rifle Storage (search excerpt only) · Reddit r/WAGuns: SecureIt gun storage, any experience with these? (search excerpt only)
Who it's for: For one long gun up to 46.5 in (plus handguns) under the bed, or two long guns standing in a closet; SecureIt lists it as California DOJ approved, it has no fire rating, and its narrow body holds far less than a drawer safe.
Pick this narrow box when the gun is long and floor space is tight. SecureIt’s spec table gives 47.25 x 13 x 6.5 in outside (14 in deep with the knob) and 47 lb, in 14-gauge welded steel with a 3-point locking system and a full-length piano hinge. Lying flat it takes one long gun up to 46.5 in, plus handguns. Stood upright in a closet, it holds two long guns with optics.
The current version pairs a backlit 4-digit keypad with a capacitive fingerprint scanner, a USB-C power port and two override keys. SecureIt lists it as California DOJ approved. A SIG Talk owner has kept a keypad Fast Box mounted to his metal bed frame since 2020, with a short shotgun, an AR pistol and several handguns inside. One r/homedefense owner misses a start-over button for when you mistype the code. The fingerprint version is new, so owner history is still thin. The SecureIt Fast Box Model 47 is sold on Amazon by SecureIt itself.
Under bed gun safe comparison
The SnapSafe is the lowest and roomiest, the Hornady opens fastest and the Fast Box is the slimmest. The table below compares each safe’s height against your clearance, plus entry, steel, weight and anchoring; how we score safes explains the scores.

| SnapSafe Large | Hornady AR Gun Locker | Fast Box Model 47 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outside height | 6 in | 6.75 in | 6.5 in |
| Footprint | 40 x 22 in | 42 x 15.25 in | 47.25 x 13 in |
| Inside height | 4.5 in | 5.5 in | 6 in |
| Entry | Keypad, 2 override keys | RFID, keypad, 2 keys | Backlit keypad, fingerprint, 2 keys |
| Steel | 14-gauge | 16-gauge, 4 lugs | 14-gauge welded, 3-point lock |
| Weight | 105 lb | 50-55 lb | 47 lb |
| Holds | Carbine or several handguns | Up to 2 tactical-length rifles or shotguns | 1 long gun lying flat |
| Anchoring | Holes, 5 ft cable | Holes, cable | Holes, hardware |
| Fire rating | None | None | None |
From our notes: When we lined up the three spec sheets, the number that decided the most wasn’t steel gauge or lock type. It was height: 6 in for the SnapSafe, 6.5 in for the Fast Box and 6.75 in for the Hornady. Then we read the inside numbers. The SnapSafe manual gives 4.5 in inside, and one owner measured closer to 4.25 in of usable drawer. That gap is why our table lists inside height, so you can check your rifle with its optic against the number that counts.
Measure the bed before you buy an under bed safe
Measure from the floor to the lowest rail or slat at the exact spot the safe will sit, then check the frame along its full length. The picks run 6 to 6.75 in tall, so a 4.25 in gap like that r/homedefense poster’s rules out all three; even SnapSafe’s 5 in Medium won’t clear it. Gun University’s reviewer learned the second lesson the hard way: “My main mistake was not factoring in the middle of the bed frame poles.”

Before ordering, check these four things:
- Height from the floor to the lowest point of the frame, with carpet.
- Center supports, legs and rails along the safe’s length (40 to 47 in here).
- Room to open: the SnapSafe drawer slides out toward you, and you need to reach each keypad.
- A clear reach to the lock from where you sleep.
If nothing fits, bed risers add clearance, or a small box on the nightstand may suit you better. Our picks for a handgun safe for a nightstand cover that route.
Anchoring an under bed gun safe when you can’t drill
Bolt the safe down through its pre-drilled holes where you can, because a cable to the bed frame only slows a thief. Gun University puts it plainly: it doesn’t take much time to snatch a safe and open it somewhere else. All three picks have holes, and SnapSafe and Hornady include a cable, which helps renters but can be cut. In an r/liberalgunowners thread on small spaces, one reply warns: “A pelican case locked to bed frame or radiator isn’t good enough.” The SIG Talk thread opens with the same bind: “I’m in an apartment, so I can’t exactly anchor a real safe to anything.”

Our approach for renters is to ask the landlord in writing about a few small holes, or to cable the safe to a heavy metal frame and keep it out of sight. Our guide on how to bolt down a safe covers wood floors and slabs, and our gun safe for an apartment picks cover lease-friendly anchoring.
Opening it in the dark, and keeping kids out
Choose the entry you can work half asleep, and keep a backup that doesn’t depend on the same battery. A recurring complaint in bedside-safe threads is a dead battery or a fingerprint reader that won’t read; one r/CAguns owner simply “tossed it after”. Here is how each pick handles the night:
- Hornady: an RFID tag on your wrist is the fastest way in, and wall power avoids battery surprises. On AA power, press a lid button first, and the manual says to replace batteries every 12 months.
- SnapSafe: code or override key, with a low-battery warning. The keypad beeps and isn’t backlit, and the TFB owner notes the override key opens almost silently.
- Fast Box: backlit keypad plus fingerprint, a USB-C power port and two override keys.
For parents, any of these keeps small hands out only if the code, tags and keys stay with adults. Store the keys outside the safe, as Hornady’s manual advises, and never leave the drawer or lid open. A box under the bed sits at a child’s eye level, which is one more reason to anchor it.
What an under bed gun safe won’t do
None of these three carries a fire rating or an independent burglary rating, so treat each as fast-access storage, not a vault. A real fire rating means an independent lab such as UL (the UL 72 test) or Intertek tested the safe for a set time and temperature. Hornady’s owner’s manual says its locker is not intended to protect contents from fire, water or humidity. NW Safe, a safe dealer, says there are no high-security under-bed safes on the market.
A closed steel box can also trap moisture, so add a gun safe dehumidifier or desiccant and wipe guns down when you check them. For storage rules, look up your state and local firearm storage laws. California publishes a roster of approved firearm safety devices, and the Fast Box Model 47 appears on it. This is general information, not legal advice.
Our verdict
For that 4.25 in bed frame, none of these fits, so raise the bed or go to a nightstand safe; with 6 in or more of clearance, start with the SnapSafe drawer. Choose the Hornady if touch-free speed for one defensive long gun matters most and your bed clears 6.75 in. Choose the Fast Box if you want one long gun in the slimmest welded box with a backlit keypad. Run through our safe buying checklist before you order, and if the bed sits too low, our nightstand handgun safe picks are the next stop.
Questions safe buyers ask
How much clearance do you need under the bed for a gun safe?
For these picks, at least 6 in for the SnapSafe Large, 6.5 in for the SecureIt Fast Box Model 47 and 6.75 in for the Hornady locker, plus room to open the drawer or reach the keypad. SnapSafe's Medium is 5 in tall. Measure at the lowest point of the frame and check the center supports.
Will an AR-15 fit in an under bed gun safe?
Usually, if the safe is long enough and tall enough for the optic. One owner fit a 16 in AR with an adjustable stock in the SnapSafe Large, Hornady sizes its locker for tactical-length rifles and shotguns, and the Fast Box takes one long gun up to 46.5 in lying flat. Compare your rifle with its optic to the inside height.
How do you secure an under bed safe without drilling?
Cable it to a heavy metal bed frame with the included cable and keep it out of sight. A cable slows a thief but can be cut, so bolting through the pre-drilled holes is stronger where your lease or landlord allows it.
Are under bed gun safes fireproof?
Not these three. None carries a fire rating, and Hornady's manual says its locker is not meant to protect contents from fire, water or humidity. For papers or valuables, look for a safe with an independent UL 72 or Intertek fire rating.
Does an under bed gun safe keep kids out?
It helps when the code, RFID tags and keys stay with adults and the safe stays locked and anchored. Hornady says its locker meets ASTM child-resistance standards. Storage rules differ by state, so check your state and local laws; this is general information, not legal advice.
