The short answer
- Best overall: the SentrySafe SFW123GDC, UL Classified for 1 hour at up to 1,700°F with four 1-inch live bolts. Bolt it to the floor.
- Staff handle cash? Add the VEVOR 1.7 cu ft depository safe, so employees drop deposits without the main code. It makes no fire claim.
- Hanging files: the SentrySafe HD4100 takes letter folders and carries a UL 30-minute fire rating plus a 72-hour ETL water rating.
- Only the four SentrySafe picks carry UL fire labels; the VEVOR, Amazon Basics and Viking protect against theft only.
Picture a five-person office at closing time: the day’s cash bag on the counter, client contracts in a filing cabinet, and the server backup on a USB drive in someone’s drawer. The best safe for a small business office, for most of us, is the SentrySafe SFW123GDC bolted to the floor, because it carries a UL fire label for paper and enough steel to slow a casual thief. If employees handle cash, add a drop safe so they can deposit without knowing the main code. Paper records follow the same fire rules I used for the best fireproof document safe picks.
Best safe for small business office – the short answer
Buy an office safe by what it holds and who opens it, then bolt it down. I sorted my six picks, by job:

- Best overall: SentrySafe SFW123GDC, UL Classified for 1 hour at up to 1,700°F, 1.23 cubic feet.
- Best compact: SentrySafe FPW082HTC, the same UL hour in 0.81 cubic feet.
- Best for hanging files: SentrySafe HD4100, UL 30 minutes plus a 72-hour ETL water rating.
- Best for staff deposits: VEVOR Digital Depository Safe 1.7 Cubic Feet, a drop drawer with an anti-fish baffle.
- Best budget: Amazon Basics Steel Home Security Electronic Safe, theft only.
- Best desk safe: Viking Security Safe VS-20BLX, fingerprint access for keys and drives.
The best office safes for a small business, reviewed
Each office safe below answers a different job: records, cash drops, petty cash or desk items. I took specs from maker pages and the Amazon listings, and owner notes from retailer reviews and threads we read.

SentrySafe SFW123GDC: Best overall office safe

3.6Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)6/10
- Fire protection8/10
- Access (speed and ease)8/10
- Capacity7/10
- Value8/10
I scored fire high for the UL label on paper records, and security mid-range because there is no burglary rating; anchoring is what makes it an office safe.
What we like
- UL Classified 1 hour at up to 1,700°F, ETL Verified water protection
- Four 1-inch live-locking bolts, pry-resistant hinge bar
- Locking drawer keeps the cash bag apart from files
What we don't like
- No burglary rating; one keypad code for everyone
- Several Walmart reviewers received it dented
What owners and reviewers say review themes from 1,991 owner reviews, plus 16 posts and reviews we read
Praised for
- Room for folders and bundles, with a useful locking drawer
- Easy to program a code, and the interior light helps
Common complaints
- Several Walmart reviewers received a dented or damaged safe
- A few owners on SentrySafe's page report trouble opening it with the code or key

Who it's for: Offices keeping contracts, payroll records and a cash bag in one place; it has no burglary rating and weighs about 87 lb, so bolt it down.
The SentrySafe SFW123GDC is a 1.23 cubic foot fire and water safe from SentrySafe, and I put it first because its fire label comes from an outside lab: UL Classified to protect contents for 1 hour in up to 1700°F. Intertek’s ETL mark covers 24 hours in 8 inches of water, which matters when sprinklers or hoses follow the fire.
Inside (13.8 x 12.6 x 11.9 in) there is room for payroll records and contract folders laid flat, a locking drawer for the cash bag and an interior light. Four 1-inch live-locking bolts and a pry-resistant hinge bar give it entry-level theft resistance, and bolt-down hardware is in the box. At 86.69 lb it takes two people to place, so I’d plan the spot before it arrives.
Walmart reviewers like the drawer and the room. Several received a dented safe, and a few owners on SentrySafe’s site report trouble opening it with the code or key, so inspect it on delivery and keep the key off-site. The SentrySafe SFW123GDC has one code for everyone and no burglary rating.
SentrySafe FPW082HTC: Best compact fire safe for an office

3.3Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)5/10
- Fire protection8/10
- Access (speed and ease)8/10
- Capacity5/10
- Value8/10
I gave it the same fire score as my top pick for the same UL label, and a point less on security and capacity for three bolts and 0.81 cubic feet.
What we like
- UL Classified 1 hour at up to 1,700°F
- Backlit keypad with a lithium battery SentrySafe rates for 5+ years
- Bolt-down kit and interior light included
What we don't like
- Smaller interior, 9.6 in tall, so papers lie flat
- Some owners report a keypad that stopped taking codes
What owners and reviewers say review themes from 162 owner reviews, plus 8 posts and reviews we read
Praised for
- Easy to set up alone and to open by keypad
- Holds documents well with the inside shelf
Common complaints
- A few owners say the keypad stopped working or the code would not change
- One owner warns the override code is printed in the manual, so the manual must not sit next to the safe
Read on: SentrySafe.com customer reviews: FPW082HTC (162 reviews)
Who it's for: A one-person office or front desk that keeps deeds, contracts and a laptop drive; it holds less than the SFW123GDC and has no burglary rating.
The SentrySafe FPW082HTC is a 0.81 cubic foot fire and water safe from SentrySafe, my pick when the safe must fit under a desk. It carries the same UL Classified hour at up to 1,700°F, with ETL water protection for 24 hours in up to 5 inches of water.
The backlit keypad takes a 5-digit code, an override key backs it up, and SentrySafe rates the included lithium battery for 5+ years. Three 1-inch bolts and a pry-resistant hinge bar lock the door; a bolt-down kit comes with it. The interior is 9.6 x 12.4 x 11.5 inches, so by my measure letter paper lies flat rather than standing in folders. SentrySafe also says it protects USB drives and external hard drives, which is a maker claim, not a separate media rating.
Owners on SentrySafe’s site say it is easy to set up and holds documents well. A few report a keypad that stopped taking codes, and one warns the override code sits in the manual, so file the manual away from the safe. The SentrySafe FPW082HTC weighs 55 lb.
SentrySafe HD4100: Best office safe for hanging files

3.1Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)3/10
- Fire protection7/10
- Access (speed and ease)8/10
- Capacity6/10
- Value9/10
I rated its UL 30-minute fire label and 72-hour ETL water rating well for files, and kept security at 3 because the key lock is a privacy lock, not theft protection.
What we like
- UL Classified for 1/2 hour at up to 1550°F
- ETL Verified for 72 hours of water submersion
- Takes letter-size hanging folders
What we don't like
- Privacy key lock is not theft protection
- Owners flag a cheap-feeling latch and no carry handholds
What owners and reviewers say from 6 reviews and posts we read
Praised for
- Sturdy, well-made box at an affordable price
- Right size for a set of file folders
Common complaints
- Cheap-feeling latch, a lid that is hard to push down, and one report of the gasket coming loose
- Heavy with no handholds
Read on: Walmart customer reviews: SentrySafe HD4100 · Walmart customer reviews: SentrySafe HD4100 Charcoal Gray · ShopSavvy review summary: SentrySafe HD4100
Who it's for: Offices in a flood zone or a ground-floor unit that keep letter files; the key lock only keeps out curious hands, so it is not cash storage.
The SentrySafe HD4100 is a 0.65 cubic foot fire and water file box from SentrySafe, and I’d use it for the letter-size folders an office pulls every week. It is UL Classified for 1/2 hour at up to 1550°F and ETL Verified for 72 hours of water submersion, the longest water rating in this list.
The 12-inch-wide interior takes hanging folders across an 8.5-inch letter page, which none of the box safes here do. At about 39 lb, one person can carry it out in an evacuation, which is why I like it for a ground-floor office.
Walmart owners call it sturdy for the money. Complaints center on a cheap-feeling latch, a lid that is hard to push down and no handholds. The key lock is a privacy lock, so I’d keep the SentrySafe HD4100 inside a locked room or a larger safe, never as cash storage.
VEVOR Digital Depository Safe 1.7 Cubic Feet: Best drop safe for staff deposits

3.2Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)5/10
- Access (speed and ease)7/10
- Capacity7/10
- Value8/10
No fire claim, so I left fire out. I scored access and value well for a drop drawer that keeps staff out of the main box, and held security at 5 for the 1.2 mm body.
What we like
- Front deposit drawer with an anti-fishing baffle
- Electronic code plus two override keys, 1.7 cu ft inside
- Two mounting holes on the back
What we don't like
- No fire rating; 1.2 mm body steel
- One owner notes the deposit drawer has no lock of its own
What owners and reviewers say review themes from 16 owner reviews, plus 5 posts and reviews we read
Praised for
- Good value and works as described
- One owner says the alarm is loud enough to deter
Common complaints
- A Home Depot reviewer dislikes that the drop drawer itself has no lock
Read on: VEVOR customer reviews: Digital Depository Safe 1.7 cu ft · Home Depot customer reviews: VEVOR 1.7 cu ft depository safe (16 reviews)
Who it's for: Shops, salons and offices where employees close out the cash; it makes no fire claim and its thin body needs the two mounting holes used.
The VEVOR Digital Depository Safe 1.7 Cubic Feet is a front-drawer drop safe from VEVOR, and it is the pick I’d add the day a second person starts closing the till. Staff slide the deposit bag into the front drawer; a saw-tooth tilting anti-fishing baffle stops anyone pulling it back out, and only the code holder opens the main door.
It opens by electronic code, with two override keys, on 4 AA batteries. The door is 3 mm steel and the body 1.2 mm, with two mounting holes on the back. Inside is 10 x 10 x 16.54 inches. VEVOR’s own page lists 26.24 lb and the Amazon listing 38 lb; either way, I’d bolt it down.
On VEVOR’s site, owners praise the value, and one says the alarm is loud enough to deter. A Home Depot reviewer dislikes that the drop drawer has no lock of its own. There is no fire claim. The VEVOR depository safe controls access, not fire.
Amazon Basics Steel Home Security Electronic Safe: Best budget office safe

3.3Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)5/10
- Access (speed and ease)7/10
- Capacity7/10
- Value9/10
No fire claim, so I left fire out. A thick door for the class and 2 live bolts earn a 5 for security, held back by a 29 lb body that must be bolted down.
What we like
- 8-gauge door and 14-gauge body with 2 live door bolts, per the listing
- Keypad plus backup key; mounting hardware included
- 1.2 cubic feet with a shelf
What we don't like
- No fire or water rating
- One owner write-up reports a door that rubs
What owners and reviewers say from 2 reviews and posts we read
Praised for
- Keeps casual snoops out for little money
- Easy keypad programming with a quiet-mode option
Common complaints
- Door rubs on the frame and is noisy when opened
- Not high security; owners stress bolting it down
Read on: Top Firearm Reviews: Amazon Basics owner notes · r/carverscave: Amazon Basics Steel Safe Review
Who it's for: A home office or small shop that wants theft-only storage under a desk; it is only theft protection once bolted down, and papers have no fire protection.
The Amazon Basics Steel Home Security Electronic Safe is a 1.2 cubic foot keypad security safe from Amazon Basics, and I’d buy it for petty cash, spare keys and a checkbook when fire is not the worry. The listing gives an 8-gauge door, a 14-gauge body, 2 live door bolts and concealed pry-resistant hinges.
The keypad has a backup key, the interior (12.83 x 10.35 x 14 in) has a shelf, and the safe weighs 29.3 lb. That weight is the catch: it walks out under an arm unless you use the pre-drilled holes. Our guide on how to bolt down a safe covers wood floors and slabs.
An owner write-up mentions a door that rubs, and a Reddit owner calls it fine against casual snoops, not a determined thief. With no fire or water rating, the Amazon Basics electronic safe suits a budget, theft-only job.
Viking Security Safe VS-20BLX: Best desk safe for keys and drives

2.7Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)4/10
- Access (speed and ease)9/10
- Capacity3/10
- Value6/10
No fire claim, so I left fire out. Fingerprint, PIN and key make access fast for several users, but thin steel and an 18 lb body hold security at 4.
What we like
- Fingerprint, PIN and key; prints survive a battery swap
- Fits a cabinet shelf; 4 anchor bolts included
- Interior LED light
What we don't like
- 5 mm door and 2 mm body, thin steel
- Battery change means removing the LED unit with a screwdriver
What owners and reviewers say review themes from 5 owner reviews, plus 5 posts and reviews we read
Praised for
- Fingerprint and code both open it reliably, per two reviewers
- Feels like a hotel-style safe for less money
Common complaints
- One reviewer had locking bolts that would not fully retract
- Battery change means removing the LED unit with a screwdriver
Read on: Walmart customer reviews: Viking VS-20BLX (5 reviews)
Who it's for: Owners who lock up keys, a backup drive or a company card at the desk; the 2 mm body is thin, so bolt it down and keep cash elsewhere.
The Viking Security Safe VS-20BLX is a small biometric security safe from Viking Security Safe, and I like it at the desk for keys, a company card or a backup drive. It stores up to 32 fingerprints, so each partner enrolls a finger, plus a 4-8 digit PIN and two override keys.
It is 8 x 12 x 8 inches outside and 18 lb, with 4 anchor bolts in the box and an interior LED. The steel is the weak point for me: Viking lists a 5 mm door and a 2 mm body, and the maker says it is not fireproof.
Walmart reviewers say fingerprint and code both open it reliably. One had locking bolts that would not fully retract, and changing batteries means removing the LED unit. The Viking VS-20BLX is a desk safe, not a cash safe.
Which office safe should you get
Match the safe to what your office loses most, using the rule I’d use myself:

- Records and some cash, one manager: SentrySafe SFW123GDC, bolted down.
- Tight floor space, records only: SentrySafe FPW082HTC under the desk.
- Hanging files in a flood-prone unit: SentrySafe HD4100 in a locked room.
- Staff close out the cash: VEVOR depository safe next to the SFW123GDC.
- Petty cash and keys on a budget: Amazon Basics, bolted to a joist or slab.
- Several partners at one desk: Viking VS-20BLX with a print each.
Holding large sums overnight? Ask a safe dealer about a B-rate or UL TL-rated safe; none of these consumer safes carries a burglary rating. The video below, from dealer Safe and Vault Store, walks through which cash safe type fits which business.
Office safe comparison
My table below compares the six office safes on who certified the fire rating and how each one is anchored.

| Safe | Fire rating (who says so) | Water | Interior | Weight | Anchoring |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SentrySafe SFW123GDC | 1 hr at 1,700°F (UL) | 24 hr, 8 in (ETL) | 1.23 cu ft | 86.69 lb | Bolt-down kit |
| SentrySafe FPW082HTC | 1 hr at 1,700°F (UL) | 24 hr, 5 in (ETL) | 0.81 cu ft | 55 lb | Bolt-down kit |
| SentrySafe HD4100 | 1/2 hr at 1550°F (UL) | 72 hr (ETL) | 0.65 cu ft | about 39 lb | None |
| VEVOR 1.7 cu ft depository | None | None | 1.7 cu ft | 26.24-38 lb | 2 holes |
| Amazon Basics Electronic Safe | None | None | 1.2 cu ft | 29.3 lb | Bolt-down kit |
| Viking VS-20BLX | None (maker) | None | about 0.4 cu ft | 18 lb | 4 anchor bolts |
How we picked these office safes
We listed the safes that top-ranking pages for this search and its close variants recommend, kept models named by at least two of them, then kept only those with their own in-stock Amazon US listing. Business Insider names all three SentrySafes, the Amazon Basics and the Viking; Cape Fear Investigative and Home Depot’s drop-safe range carry the VEVOR; SentrySafe’s business range lists the FPW082HTC. Dealer-only commercial safes were left out for lack of an Amazon US listing.
We have not used these safes ourselves. Our facts come from maker spec pages and the Amazon listings, plus 42 owner reviews and posts we read. For an office, my safe buying checklist helps you weigh lock type, fire rating and floor anchoring before you settle on a model.
From our notes: The VEVOR drop drawer changed how we ranked this list. A five-person office where everyone knows one keypad code has a safe in name only, so we stopped scoring on steel alone and asked who needs to open each box. That split the picks into jobs: a UL-labeled safe for records the manager opens, a drop safe staff only feed, and a desk safe with a print per partner.
Office fire and burglary risk in numbers
An office loses records to fire and cash to theft, and the numbers show both happen. U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated average of 108,500 nonresidential building fires a year from 2017 to 2019, and stores and offices accounted for 17 percent. That works out to roughly 18,400 store and office fires a year.
Burglary is the other side. In FBI figures for 2019, the average loss per burglary was 2,661 dollars, and residential properties made up 62.8 percent of burglaries, which leaves 37.2 percent for nonresidential property like offices and shops. A UL Class 350 label covers paper; digital media such as drives need Class 125, which keeps the inside below 125°F, and none of these picks lists it, so keep a cloud backup too.
Office safe problems owners run into, and the fix
The same office safe problems repeat in owners’ threads we read, and each has a plain fix.
- Everyone knows the code. On r/smallbusiness, one owner wrote: “Managers should have the safe code, but you’d be surprised how many regular TMs probably know the code.” The fix is a drop safe for staff and a manager code nobody else holds, changed whenever someone leaves.
- The safe walks out the door. A budget safe is “not really fireproof, but if you bolt them down they are reasonably secure against most casual theft attempts,” as an r/homedefense reply puts it. Every pick here has anchor holes; use them.
- Fire or burglar, pick one. A recurring r/Safes question is whether one safe does both. At this price, no: the SentrySafes stop fire, the others slow thieves. Run two safes, or ask a dealer about a safe rated for both.
- Dead batteries, locked out. Owners in r/Safes threads describe keypads that died with no key at hand. Change batteries on a schedule and keep the override key off-site; SentrySafe owners can follow our Sentry Safe battery replacement steps.
Our verdict on the best safe for a small business office
For most small offices, the SentrySafe SFW123GDC bolted down is the best safe for a small business office, with a VEVOR drop safe beside it once staff handle cash. Back at closing time, the records sit behind a UL label and the cash bag goes in a drawer nobody else can open. If the owner’s cash also lives at home, see our best safe for cash at home picks.
Questions safe buyers ask
What is the best safe for a small business office?
For most small offices I pick the SentrySafe SFW123GDC, bolted down. It is UL Classified for 1 hour at up to 1,700°F, holds 1.23 cubic feet of records and cash, and has four 1-inch live-locking bolts. If employees handle cash, pair it with a depository safe like the VEVOR 1.7 cu ft.
Do I need a fireproof safe or a burglary safe for my office?
It depends on what you lose most if it goes. Records and drives need a UL fire rating; cash needs steel, anchoring and controlled access. None of the consumer safes here carries a burglary rating, so a business holding large sums should talk to a safe dealer about B-rate or TL-rated safes.
What is a drop safe, and does my business need one?
A drop safe has a deposit drawer or slot, so staff can put cash in without opening the main door. If more than one or two people close out the till, it keeps the code with the manager and cuts arguments over missing cash.
Should an office safe be bolted down?
Yes. Every pick here ships with anchor hardware or pre-drilled holes, and the light ones (18 to 39 lb) can be carried out under an arm. Check your lease before drilling a rented floor.
Will an office fire safe protect USB drives and hard drives?
Only as far as the maker claims. SentrySafe says the FPW082HTC protects USB drives and hard drives, but the true media standard, UL Class 125, keeps the inside below 125°F, and none of these picks lists that class. Keep a cloud or off-site backup too.
