The short answer
- Best overall: the Stealth College Dorm Safe V5.0, a 35 lb steel safe that stands a laptop up to 18 inches on edge, with a UL listed keypad lock and a security cable.
- Under the bed: the Vaultz chest holds a laptop flat; for meds and a passport, the 3.2 lb SentrySafe P008E cabled to the bed frame.
- None of the five claims a fire rating, and you usually can't drill in a dorm, so the cable and a hidden spot do the anchoring.
The best safe for a college dorm room, for most students, is the Stealth College Dorm Safe V5.0: a 35 lb steel safe that holds a laptop up to 18 inches on edge and cables to the bed frame. A dorm safe has one job: stop the quick grab while a roommate’s guest is in or the door is propped open, much like our safe picks for a teenager at home. NCES counted 6,500 burglaries on US college campuses in 2021. Renting off campus? See our apartment safe picks for renters.
Best safe for a college dorm room – the short answer
Pick the dorm safe by what you leave in the room, then cable it to the bed frame.

- Best overall: Stealth College Dorm Safe V5.0
- Heaviest laptop safe: Liberty Personal Home Safe HPS-100-R
- Under-bed lock box: Vaultz Locking Storage Chest
- Meds and a passport: SentrySafe P008E
- Gym and library: Master Lock 5900D
None claims a UL or Intertek fire rating; in a dorm the real risk is theft.

Stealth College Dorm Safe V5.0: Best overall dorm safe

3.3Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)6/10
- Access (speed and ease)8/10
- Capacity7/10
- Value6/10
I left fire out because Stealth makes no fire claim. I scored security highest here for the steel body, UL listed lock and 35 lb weight, and I took value down because owners call it expensive.
What owners and reviewers say review themes from 16 owner reviews, plus 4 posts and reviews we read
Praised for
- Holds a laptop and paperwork in a small footprint
- The cable secures it to a desk or bed frame
Common complaints
- The battery type and lockout process are easy to miss
- Not fire or water resistant
Read on: Dean Safe: Stealth Compact College Dorm & RV Safe reviews (16 reviews)
Who it's for: Students who leave a laptop, tablet and meds in the room every day; it takes 7.25 inches of floor width, and it is a theft deterrent, not a fire safe.
The Stealth College Dorm Safe V5.0 is a vertical steel dorm safe from Stealth, and it answers the “no floor space” worry. The body is 20 inches tall but 7.25 wide, and the 18.5 x 6.5 x 12 inch interior holds laptops up to 18 inches on edge. Stealth lists 35 lbs, a UL listed electronic keypad lock with a 6-digit code, a 1/4 inch hardplate and two steel bolts. The 9V battery changes from outside, and two rear holes let a charging cable in. A security cable and four bolt-down holes come with it. Buyers praise the weight and room for a 15 to 17 inch laptop plus a tablet; the common complaint is price.
Liberty Personal Home Safe HPS-100-R: Best 16-gauge laptop safe

3.2Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)6/10
- Access (speed and ease)8/10
- Capacity6/10
- Value6/10
No fire claim, so I left fire out. I gave it good security for 16-gauge steel and its weight, and I held capacity and value back for the narrow interior and the missing-cable report.
What owners and reviewers say from 1 review and posts we read
Praised for
- The one reviewer had no complaint about the safe itself
Common complaints
- The security cable was missing from the box, and support was slow to help
Who it's for: Students who want the heaviest, slimmest laptop safe for under a desk; the 5.5 inch interior width suits one laptop, and it makes no fire claim.
The Liberty Personal Home Safe HPS-100-R is a slim upright laptop safe from Liberty Safe, and I like it when weight matters. Safe and Vault Store lists 16-gauge steel and about 45 pounds, the heaviest here, with a SecuRam electronic keypad and dual locking bars. Liberty gives a 17.5 x 5.5 x 13.5 inch interior in a 7.625 inch wide body that slides beside a desk; the dealer adds a laptop holder, three lined shelves and a security cable. I found only one owner review, on Liberty’s site: the cable was missing and support was slow. I’d check the box for the cable on delivery.
Vaultz Locking Storage Chest: Best under-bed lock box for a dorm
2.4Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)2/10
- Access (speed and ease)6/10
- Capacity7/10
- Value7/10
No fire claim, so I left fire out. I scored capacity well for its laptop floor and value for the price band, but security is low because owners describe thin, flexible walls.
What owners and reviewers say review themes from 24 owner reviews, plus 10 posts and reviews we read
Praised for
- Right size for a laptop, iPad and documents, and slides under a bed
- Felt-lined interior and lid storage feel well made for the money
Common complaints
- Thin, flexible walls and an exposed hinge worry owners
- One owner's lock jammed
Read on: Walmart customer reviews: Vaultz Locking Storage Chest (24 reviews)
Who it's for: Students who want a laptop, chargers and papers out of sight under a lofted bed; the thin walls stop a curious guest, not a determined thief.
The Vaultz Locking Storage Chest is a combination-lock storage chest from Vaultz, and I treat it as a privacy box rather than a safe. It weighs 6.3 lb, and the 17.52 x 12.4 x 4.25 inch interior takes a laptop flat with chargers and papers. Two resettable combination locks mean no key to lose, and a cable grommet and tether loop tie it to the bed frame. Walmart owners like how it slides under a lofted bed. They also call the walls thin and flexible, point to an exposed hinge, and one had a lock jam. It keeps guests out, not a thief with a screwdriver.
SentrySafe P008E: Best small dorm safe for meds and a passport

2.3Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)2/10
- Access (speed and ease)8/10
- Capacity2/10
- Value8/10
No fire claim, so I left fire out. I scored access and value high for a keypad with a key backup, and kept security and capacity low for its size and the lid complaints.
What owners and reviewers say review themes from 153 owner reviews, plus 10 posts and reviews we read
Praised for
- A parent tethered it to a dorm closet rod for meds and valuables
- Easy to set up, with the key as a backup
Common complaints
- Lid does not fit tightly and the cable entry is a weak point
- Some units would not open or close properly
Read on: Walmart customer reviews: SentrySafe P008E (153 reviews)
Who it's for: Students locking up prescription meds, a passport or cash on a closet shelf; it only works when the cable is looped around something fixed.
The SentrySafe P008E is a portable steel safe from SentrySafe, and my pick for the small items students worry about most. SentrySafe lists 3.2 lb, a 1.9 x 9.8 x 7.1 inch interior, a 1 to 8 digit keypad code and a steel tethering cable; retailers list an override key. That fits prescription medication, a passport, cash and a phone, not a laptop. One Walmart parent tethered it to the closet rod in a daughter’s dorm. Other owners say the lid fits loosely, making the cable entry a weak point, and some got units that would not open or close. I’d hide it on a high shelf.
Master Lock 5900D: Best portable dorm safe for the gym and library

1.9Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
- Security (lock and build)1/10
- Access (speed and ease)7/10
- Capacity1/10
- Value8/10
No fire claim, so I left fire out. I rated value and access well for a battery-free box I can carry anywhere, and security and capacity at the bottom because it is a basic-security travel case.
What owners and reviewers say review themes from 282 owner reviews, plus 10 posts and reviews we read
Praised for
- Straps to a bed and fits in a backpack for travel
- Handy low-security box for medication and small items
Common complaints
- One owner could not reopen it after setting the combination
- Rubber on the dial came off for one owner, and one got no instructions
Read on: Walmart customer reviews: Master Lock 5900D (282 reviews)
Who it's for: Students who need a phone and wallet locked to a bench or table outside the room; Master Lock rates it basic security, so it stops grabs, not tools.
The Master Lock 5900D is a portable personal safe from Master Lock, and it covers what a room safe can’t: your phone and wallet at the gym or library. It is about 2.3 x 9.5 x 4.9 inches and uses a set-your-own 4-digit combination, so no batteries. The cable wraps around a bench or table leg and doubles as a handle, and a port lets an earbud or charging cord through. Master Lock rates it basic security, and a lock-picking channel showed the dials can be read, so it only deters grabs. Walmart owners strap it to beds; one was locked out after setting the code.
Dorm safe comparison table
This table compares the five dorm safes on laptop fit, weight and lock.

| Safe | Laptop? | Weight | Lock |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stealth V5.0 | On edge, to 18 in | 35 lb | UL listed keypad |
| Liberty HPS-100-R | On edge | about 45 lb | SecuRam keypad |
| Vaultz chest | Flat | 6.3 lb | Combination |
| SentrySafe P008E | No | 3.2 lb | Keypad + key |
| Master Lock 5900D | No | about 1.6 lb | Combination |
Which dorm safe should you get
Match the dorm safe to the item you’d hate to lose most.

- A laptop, every day: Stealth V5.0, or the heavier Liberty.
- Laptop and papers under a lofted bed: Vaultz chest.
- Meds, a passport or cash: SentrySafe P008E.
- Phone and wallet at the gym: Master Lock 5900D.
How we picked these dorm room safes
We kept only dorm safes that two or more independent top-ranking guides recommend, each with its own in-stock Amazon US listing, and checked specs against the makers. From a College Prof, College Raptor and Safe and Vault Store each name two or more. We have not used these safes; owner notes come from 35 owner reviews we read at Walmart, Dean Safe and Liberty’s site, plus Reddit threads. Scores follow our how we score page, with fire left out.
From our notes: The Stealth’s 6.5-inch interior width looked too narrow for a laptop until we read its dimensions the other way. At 18.5 inches tall and 12 deep, it holds a laptop on edge like a book, and so does the Liberty’s 17.5 by 13.5 inch space. Both need only 7 to 8 inches of floor beside a desk; the flat Vaultz chest needs a 20 by 14 inch spot under the bed.
How to secure a dorm safe without drilling
Cable the dorm safe to something fixed, hide it, and read the dorm rules first.
- Ask residence life whether cables or bolts break housing rules.
- Hide it in a closet or under the bed.
- Loop the security cable around the bed frame.
- Change the factory code; keep the override key elsewhere.
- Swap keypad batteries each semester.
- Check insurance: Triple-I says a parent’s homeowners policy typically covers a dorm at 10 percent of the contents limit.
Dorm safe problems students run into, and the fix
Most dorm safe problems are space, roommates, light boxes and lockouts.
- No room. An r/homedefense student asked, “Is there even space for one of those floor models that can hold a laptop?” Go upright (Stealth, Liberty) or under the bed (Vaultz).
- Roommate worries. An r/UIUC reply: “I wouldn’t be offended, mostly annoyed bc I have no inclination to steal their items.” Say the safe is for meds and agree on the anchor point.
- Carried off. Small safes are “reasonably secure against most casual theft attempts” only when anchored, as an r/homedefense reply notes. Use the cable.
- Locked out. For dead batteries, see our SentrySafe battery replacement guide.
For a passport, add a fireproof document bag and use the safe buying checklist. Traveling over break? See our travel safe guide.
Questions safe buyers ask
What is the best safe for a college dorm room?
For a laptop I pick the Stealth College Dorm Safe V5.0: steel, 35 lb, a UL listed electronic lock, room for laptops up to 18 inches standing on edge, and a cable for the bed frame. For meds and a passport only, the small SentrySafe P008E is enough.
Will my laptop fit in a dorm safe?
Check the interior, not the outside. The Stealth (18.5 x 6.5 x 12 in) and Liberty (17.5 x 5.5 x 13.5 in) hold a laptop on edge; the Vaultz chest (17.52 x 12.4 in floor) holds one flat. The P008E and Master Lock 5900D do not.
Can I bolt a safe down in a dorm room?
Usually not: residence hall handbooks restrict drilling and changes to furniture, so read yours or ask residence life. Use the safe's security cable around the bed frame or another fixed object instead.
Do I need a fireproof safe in a dorm?
Not for theft, which is the common dorm risk. If you keep a passport or birth certificate there, add a fire-resistant document bag, since none of these five safes claims a fire rating.
Does insurance cover a laptop stolen from a dorm room?
Often partly. Triple-I says a parent's homeowners policy generally covers a full-time student's things in a dorm at typically 10 percent of the contents limit. Check that figure, or buy renters insurance.
