The short answer

  • My pick is the Hornady RAPiD Safe Night Guard: hold a watchband tag, key fob or sticker to it and the drawer opens, with a code and a key as backups.
  • For a drawer, I'd take the 13.7 lb Keypad Vault; for a 1911 or 4-inch revolver in a low box, the 2700KP.
  • For rifles, the Compact Ready Vault holds a few long guns in a 10 x 10 in footprint, and the 165 lb Ready Vault holds up to six.
  • Treat every programmed tag like a key, keep the barrel key outside the safe, and know that none of these RFID safes has a fire rating.

The best RFID gun safe for most homes is the Hornady RAPiD Safe Night Guard: hold a watchband tag, key fob or sticker to it and the drawer opens, with a code and a key as backups. The right RFID gun safe depends on what you store, so my four other picks step up in size, from a drawer box to a six-rifle vault.

Every RFID gun safe here comes from Hornady, which holds U.S. patents on this tag-entry design, and no other brand’s RFID safe appeared on two or more of the top-ranking pages we opened. If you’d rather have a fingerprint reader or a mechanical lock, our pistol safe guide compares those lock types.

From our notes: The Keypad Vault weighs 13.7 lb and the Ready Vault weighs 165 lb, yet the same watchband tag can open both. That is what sets these apart: one tag for the whole line. Reading Hornady’s manual, I noticed a detail no top guide mentions. The tag has to come within 1 inch of the reader, so where you mount the reader matters as much as which safe you buy. I’d plan the spot first, then pick the size.

RFID gun safe comparison by size and what it holds

An RFID gun safe should be chosen by what it must hold and how you will anchor it, since all five use the same tag, code and key entry. This table compares them on those points:

RFID gun safe picks I recommend

Each RFID gun safe below fits one storage job: a bedside pistol, a drawer, a single 1911, a rifle in a corner, or a long-gun collection. Scores follow our how we score rubric.

Who it's for: Someone who keeps one full-size handgun beside the bed; it holds one gun, not two, and the four tags must stay with adults.

The Hornady RAPiD Safe Night Guard is an RFID nightstand gun safe from Hornady, built to look like a bedside alarm clock. I rank it first because the fastest way in works in the dark: hold one of four included RFID tags (a watchband tag, a key fob and two decals) to the glass front. A user-set code and a mechanical key back it up.

It runs on a 12V adapter with four AAA batteries as backup, so a power cut alone won’t lock you out. Hornady lists it at 18 lb with a 2.2 x 9.2 x 6.9 in interior, two USB-A ports, and a security cable rated to 1,500 pounds. Top Firearm Reviews puts the steel at 14-gauge.

A Field & Stream reviewer found the RFID fast and consistent but wished it could fit both Glocks in her home. A Top Firearm Reviews tester called the red clock bright enough to see with eyes closed and found mounting from inside cramped. I’d use the cable around the bed frame and still screw it down.

Who it's for: Someone who wants the safe out of sight in a nightstand or desk drawer; it runs on four AA batteries and comes with only two tags.

The Hornady RAPiD Safe Keypad Vault is a 13.7 lb RFID handgun safe from Hornady with a spring-assist lid, made to sit in a drawer. I pick it when the safe should stay out of sight: open the nightstand, tap the tag, and the lid lifts onto a lit interior.

Hornady lists three entry methods (RFID reader, access code, mechanical key) and a 10.6 x 7.8 x 3.3 in interior. Guns & Ammo says it is 14-gauge steel, runs on four AA batteries, and fits a full-size handgun with a red dot and a light, plus a flashlight or spare magazines. Only two tags come in the box: a watchband tag and a decal.

A Taurus forum owner says it stores two full-size handguns and opens quietly. Because it runs on batteries only, I’d write a change date on the calendar.

  • One owner reports daily use for 18 months without an issue

Common complaints

  • Lucky Gunner calls the RFID feature no faster than the buttons, and worries about tags left where kids can find them

Who it's for: Someone storing one 1911-size pistol or a 4-inch revolver on a shelf, in a closet or in a vehicle with the included cable; the interior is only 2.2 in tall.

The Hornady RAPiD Safe 2700KP is a 14-gauge steel RFID pistol safe from Hornady, sized for 1911 pistols and 4-inch revolvers. I like it as a low box for a shelf, a closet or a vehicle, since the included cable can loop around a fixed point. A tag pops the spring-assist lid; a 4-6 digit code and two barrel keys are the backups.

Hornady lists two hardened internal locking lugs, a 9 x 7.7 x 2.2 in interior, and says it exceeds ASTM International standards for child and pry resistance. It reads up to five tags, and the box includes a watchband tag, a key fob and two decals.

One r/Firearms owner reports using several larger RAPiD safes daily for 18 months with no issue. Lucky Gunner evaluated the smaller 2600KP and found RFID no faster than its buttons. The site also worried about kids finding the tags. That 2.2 in interior means one pistol and little else.

Who it's for: Someone who keeps a home-defense rifle or shotgun in a bedroom corner or closet; at 80 lb it must be screwed to a wall stud, and Amazon showed only one unit left.

The Hornady RAPiD Safe Compact Ready Vault is an 80 lb RFID long-gun cabinet from Hornady with WiFi alerts. I pick it for a home-defense rifle or shotgun in a bedroom corner: its footprint is 10 x 10 in and it stands about 52 in tall.

Hornady lists five hardened locking lugs and four tags (watchband, key fob, two decals). The Armory Life notes a battery compartment in the door for power loss, a four-gun rifle rack and pre-drilled holes for a wall stud. The WiFi version sends an app alert when the vault opens.

The Armory Life reviewer liked how it blends into a room. He found Hornady’s 4-handgun rack too wide to fit. A Reddit owner keeps a Compact Ready Vault and a Ready Vault on either side of the bed and calls them super fast to open. Amazon showed only one unit left when I checked.

Who it's for: Someone with up to six rifles or shotguns who wants tag entry; it is the priciest pick, needs floor anchoring and has no fire rating.

The Hornady RAPiD Safe Ready Vault is a 165 lb RFID gun safe from Hornady that holds up to six rifles or shotguns and 14 handguns, per American Rifleman. I picked it for a collection that needs tag entry, not just one bedside pistol.

American Rifleman lists a 14-gauge door, 16-gauge walls, five hardened locking lugs, and four AA batteries in the door as backup. Hornady gives a 51.8 x 19.0 x 12.7 in interior and WiFi alerts through its app. Pre-drilled holes in the base let you anchor it to the floor.

The American Rifleman reviewer praised fumble-free access but called it not inexpensive. I’d add that a safe this size with no fire rating is a trade-off you should accept knowingly.

Which RFID gun safe should you get

  • One handgun beside the bed: Hornady RAPiD Safe Night Guard.
  • A safe hidden in a nightstand or desk drawer: Keypad Vault.
  • A 1911 or 4-inch revolver on a shelf or in a vehicle: 2700KP.
  • A rifle or two in a small corner: Compact Ready Vault.
  • Up to six long guns: Ready Vault.

How to set up an RFID gun safe

Set up an RFID gun safe once, carefully, so daily access is one tap. The video in this section is Hornady’s own first-use walkthrough.

  1. Pick a mounting spot where your wrist or key fob can reach the reader in the dark, within 1 inch.
  2. Bolt or screw the safe to a stud, floor or solid furniture, and add the cable where one is included.
  3. Plug in the AC adapter and install fresh backup batteries.
  4. Set a 4-6 digit keypad combination that isn’t a birthday or address.
  5. Program only the tags you will carry, then test each one.
  6. Store the barrel key outside the safe, in a place another trusted adult knows.

RFID gun safe problems owners run into, and the fix

Most RFID gun safe problems come from the tags and the power, not the steel.

Hornady RAPiD Safe Compact Ready Vault

Anyone with a tag can open it

A tag works like a key, for anyone. Gun University warns: “With five RFIDs able to be programmed at once, it gets difficult to actually control access to your gun because anyone with an RFID can open your safe.” The fix is to program only the tags you wear or carry, lock up the spares, and re-program the safe if one goes missing.

Dead electronics and a lockout

A r/CCW owner says his RAPiD vehicle safe died: “RFID doesn’t work, code doesn’t work. Tried new batteries, plugging it in and trying it unplugged as well, nothing.” It is a single report on a different model, but it shows why the key matters. Keep it outside the safe and test it every few months.

Batteries and backup entry

In an r/CAguns thread, one owner tossed a cheap nightstand safe after its battery ran out or the fingerprint reader failed. RFID needs no clean finger, and four of these picks run on wall power with battery backup. The Keypad Vault runs on batteries alone, so change them on a schedule.

Kids and tags left around

A soon-to-be dad on r/guns asked how to keep a bedside gun locked yet reachable in seconds. Lucky Gunner’s warning applies here: a fun-looking tag left on a dresser is an open safe. Wear the watchband tag, or put the decal on your phone, which stays with you.

How we picked these RFID gun safes

We picked RFID gun safes that at least two pages recommend among the top results for this search and close variants, and that Amazon US showed in stock on November 3, 2026. I have not handled these safes; specs come from Hornady’s pages and manual, and owner praise and complaints come from 13 owner and reviewer reports.

Top Firearm Reviews, Field & Stream and Handguns Magazine name the Night Guard. Guns & Ammo reviews the Keypad Vault. American Firearms and Lucky Gunner cover the KP pistol safes. The Armory Life and NRA Women cover the Compact Ready Vault, and American Rifleman and GUNS Magazine the Ready Vault. All five Amazon listings were sold by third-party sellers, not Amazon itself.

RFID gun safe limits: fire, burglary and storage rules

These RFID safes keep out kids, guests and quick grabs, not fire. None has a UL 72 fire class or an Intertek (ETL) fire test, and Hornady makes no fire claim. Hornady says every RAPiD safe is listed by the California DOJ as an approved firearm safety device.

Storage laws vary by state and city, so check your official state and local firearm rules; this is not legal advice. For a fingerprint alternative, see our biometric gun safe guide, and to anchor any pick, read our guide to bolting down a safe.

Questions safe buyers ask

Is RFID faster than biometric?

Usually, yes. An RFID gun safe opens when a programmed tag comes within about an inch of the reader, so there is no finger to place at the right angle and no code to punch in. Fingerprint readers can miss wet, dirty or faint prints; RFID only misses if you don't have the tag.

Can RFID gun safes be hacked?

The bigger risk is simpler: anyone holding a programmed tag can open the safe. Program only the tags you carry, keep spares locked away, and re-program the safe if one goes missing. Hornady's tags are programmed to each safe, so an unprogrammed tag does nothing.

What happens if I lose my RFID tag?

Use the keypad code or the barrel key, then re-program the safe so the lost tag no longer works. Every Hornady RAPiD safe here has all three entry methods, and each reads up to five tags.

Do RFID gun safes work without power?

Not electronically. The RAPiD safes run on an AC adapter with batteries as backup, so a power cut alone shouldn't lock you out. If both fail, the mechanical key opens the safe, which is why it must live outside the safe.

Can one RFID tag open several safes?

Yes. Hornady says its tags can be programmed to open any other RAPiD safe you own, so one watchband tag can open a bedside Night Guard and a closet Ready Vault.
