The short answer

  • For a handgun in a nightstand drawer, my pick is the Fort Knox Original Pistol Box PB1: a 10-gauge steel box with a push-button Simplex lock and no battery to die.
  • For a fingerprint lock in a shallow drawer, the Vaultek 20 Series is only 2.625 in tall; for several users and jewelry, the 120-print Barska AX11556.
  • For cash, papers and passports on a budget, the Barska Top Opening Keypad Safe or the Amazon Basics slim desk safe, both with backup keys.
  • None of the five has a fire rating from UL or Intertek, so measure your drawer and bolt the safe into the furniture frame, not just the drawer.

The best drawer safe depends on what goes in the drawer. For a handgun, I pick the Fort Knox Original Pistol Box PB1: a 10-gauge steel box with a push-button lock and no battery to die. For cash, jewelry and passports, a top-opening Barska or the slim Amazon Basics safe gives more room for valuables. The catch most guides skip is fit, so every pick below is sized against real drawers.

A drawer safe is a small steel box that mounts inside a desk, dresser or nightstand drawer. It stops kids, guests and grab-and-go thieves, which matters because 62.8 percent of US burglaries in the FBI’s 2019 count hit homes. It will not stop a prepared burglar with tools and time. If your drawer safe is mainly for a pistol by the bed, our nightstand handgun safe guide compares bedside options that sit on top of the furniture too.

From our notes: The Fort Knox PB1 is 4.25 inches tall, and the Barska AX11556 is 5. That three-quarter inch decided our list more than any feature. We pulled the exterior and interior dimensions for every drawer safe the top guides recommend and lined them up by height. Two popular picks, the Stack-On PDS-1500 and the SentrySafe QAP1BE, were unavailable on Amazon. The five left run from 2.625 to 5 inches tall, so at least one fits almost any drawer.

Drawer safe comparison: fit, lock and backup entry

The height column decides whether a drawer safe fits; the lock column decides whether it opens when you need it. This table lists the five drawer safes by exterior size (W x D x H), lock, backup entry and the item each one suits best:

Drawer safe picks we recommend

Each drawer safe below wins one job: battery-free handgun access, a shallow drawer, a shared family safe, valuables on a keypad, or the lowest cost. Scores follow our how we score rubric.

3.2Best Safe Spec Score out of 5
  • Security (lock and build)7/10
  • Access (speed and ease)7/10

I scored security highest here for the 10-gauge body and concealed hinge; access is quick and battery-free once you learn the code, and no fire claim means fire is left out.

What owners and reviewers say from 2 reviews and posts we read

Praised for

  • Heavy 10-gauge steel and a Simplex lock with no batteries to replace
  • Quick to get into, which is why owners recommend it for the bedside

Common complaints

  • An r/CCW owner calls it very heavy, which also makes it a tight fit for many drawers

Read on: r/CCW thread on pistol lockboxes (PB1 owner comment) · r/handguns, looking for a good bedside pistol safe

Who it's for: Handgun owners who want the gun in a deep nightstand or desk drawer and never want to think about batteries; at 4.25 in tall and 22 lb it needs a deep, sturdy drawer.

The Fort Knox Original Pistol Box PB1 is a 10-gauge steel pistol safe from Fort Knox, made in the USA. I put it first because its Simplex mechanical lock works by push buttons alone. There is no battery to die and no fingerprint to misread at 3 a.m. Fort Knox lists a 3/16 in wrap-around door, a concealed continuous hinge, a gas strut that holds the lid open and four pre-drilled anchor holes. The Amazon listing calls it California DOJ certified.

The size is the trade-off. Outside it measures 12.5 x 10.38 x 4.25 in and it weighs 22 lb, per Safe and Vault Store’s spec sheet. Inside, 11.62 x 9.12 x 3.62 in works out to 0.22 cu ft, enough for a full-size pistol and a spare magazine.

Owners on r/CCW and r/handguns praise the heavy steel and a lock that is quick to get into without batteries. The complaint is bulk: one r/CCW owner calls it very heavy. I’d skip it only if your drawer is under about 5 in deep inside.

Vaultek 20 Series Biometric Safe: Best fingerprint safe for a shallow drawer

  • Security (lock and build)6/10
  • Access (speed and ease)8/10
  • Capacity3/10
  • Value5/10

I gave access the top score for the auto-open lid and three ways in; 16-gauge steel and a small interior hold security and capacity back, and fire is left out because Vaultek makes no fire claim.

What owners and reviewers say from 4 reviews and posts we read

Praised for

  • An owner with two Vaultek safes is happy with the biometric reader and the numeric backup

Common complaints

  • Owners of earlier models report a reader that stopped working, a lockout and a lost backup key
  • One owner said a battery came loose from its housing when the drawer was opened and closed

Who it's for: One handgun (up to 10.70 in long) and a spare magazine or a passport in a shallow nightstand drawer; the interior is small and owners of earlier Vaultek models report fingerprint and charging problems.

The Vaultek 20 Series Biometric Safe is a 16-gauge carbon steel biometric gun safe from Vaultek, and at 2.625 in tall it is the only pick that fits a slim nightstand drawer. The lid opens on its own after a fingerprint read, a backlit keypad code or one of two backup keys. The ViSN listing stores up to 80 prints, adds Wi-Fi alerts and an interior light, and runs on a power cable with three AAA batteries for up to 3 months of backup.

Inside it is small: 11 x 5.75 x 2 in, or about 0.07 cu ft by my math. It fits a handgun up to 10.70 in long, per Vaultek’s listing, and little else.

What owners say matters here. An r/CCW owner with two Vaultek safes is happy with the biometrics and the numeric backup. Owners of earlier Vaultek models on r/hacking and r/CAguns describe a reader that quit and a lockout. One r/handguns owner said a battery came loose from its housing as the drawer opened and closed. My rule: enroll each finger several times and keep a key outside the drawer.

I rate capacity and access well for the wide interior and 120-print reader; steel gauge is not published, so security stays mid-range, and there is no fire claim to score.

What owners and reviewers say from 2 reviews and posts we read

Praised for

  • Fits nicely into a nightstand drawer
  • Fingerprint reader works well and the size is convenient

Common complaints

  • The beeper is loud until you turn on silent mode
  • A fingerprint opening takes a few seconds, and it is not fireproof

Read on: SAFESandMORE, Barska AX11556 product page and reviews · OpticsPlanet, Barska Top Opening Biometric Safe reviews · Biometric Gun Safe Info, Barska AX11556 review (owner summary)

Who it's for: Couples or families keeping jewelry, cash, passports or a handgun in a wide dresser or desk drawer; it is 14.75 in wide and 5 in tall, so measure first.

The Barska AX11556 Biometric Top Opening Drawer Safe is a top-opening biometric drawer safe from Barska, and my pick when several adults share one safe. It stores up to 120 fingerprints and drives two motorized solid steel deadbolts. A silent mode keeps it quiet, and two backup keys cover a dead electric battery. Each deadbolt retracts under the top-opening lid, which lifts toward you inside the drawer. Four AA batteries run it for up to a year of daily use, per SAFESandMORE.

It is the roomiest pick at 0.23 cu ft (14.5 x 11 x 2.5 in inside). That room costs drawer space: 14.75 in wide, 11.25 in deep and 5 in tall, at 23.3 lb.

Owners on SAFESandMORE and OpticsPlanet say it fits a nightstand drawer well, and one suggests turning off the beeper. A review summary on Biometric Gun Safe Info notes a fingerprint opening of about 3 seconds and no fire or water protection. I’d keep jewelry, passports and a handgun here, not deeds you need after a fire.

Praised for

  • Fits a drawer and is easy to set up
  • Works well for the price

Common complaints

  • Owners describe it as value for money but not top quality

Read on: Desertcart, Barska AX13762 reviews

Who it's for: Home-office and bedroom drawers holding cash, documents or jewelry; the keypad stores only one PIN, so everyone shares the same code.

The Barska Top Opening Keypad Safe AX13762 is a top-opening keypad drawer safe from Barska, built to mount inside a large drawer. I like it for cash, papers and jewelry you reach weekly. It has two pry-resistant steel deadbolts, a silent mode and a low-battery alert, plus two backup keys and four AA batteries in the box.

It measures 12 x 9.06 x 4.53 in and holds 0.21 cu ft, per the Amazon listing. The keypad stores one PIN, so everyone shares one code.

Owners on Desertcart say it fits a drawer, works well and was easy to set up. One calls it value for money but not top quality. Barska publishes no steel gauge, so I treat it as a privacy and snatch-theft box, not a vault.

What owners and reviewers say from 3 reviews and posts we read

Praised for

  • Compact enough for a desk drawer and easy to set a code
  • Feels solid for its size

Common complaints

  • A dead battery plus a lost key left one owner locked out

Read on: Desertcart, Amazon Basics slim desk drawer safe reviews · r/safecracking, Amazon Basics safe with dead battery and lost key · Bob Vila, best home safes (slim drawer safe notes)

Who it's for: Passports, a phone, cash or medication in a desk drawer at the lowest cost; the interior is only 1.7 in tall and the battery housing takes up part of it.

The Amazon Basics Small Slim Desk Drawer Security Safe is a front-opening keypad safe from Amazon Basics, sized for a standard desk drawer at 11.8 x 8.6 x 4.4 in. It has two live door bolts, pry-resistant concealed hinges, an emergency key and hardware to mount it to the drawer. It weighs 11.3 lb (5.12 kg).

The interior is the weak spot: 11.7 x 8.5 x 1.7 in, about 0.1 cu ft. Bob Vila’s reviewers found the battery housing takes up about half the inside, and a short drop could knock the batteries loose.

Desertcart owners call it solid for its size and easy to program. On r/safecracking, an owner with a dead battery and a lost key could not get in. I’d use it for passports, a phone or medication, with the key kept in another room.

Which drawer safe should you get

  • A handgun, and you never want to think about batteries: Fort Knox PB1.
  • A handgun in a drawer under 4 in deep: Vaultek 20 Series.
  • Several adults sharing jewelry, cash and passports: Barska AX11556.
  • Cash and papers on a keypad: Barska Top Opening Keypad Safe AX13762.
  • Small items at the lowest cost: Amazon Basics slim desk safe.

How to measure a drawer for a drawer safe

Measure the drawer’s inside, not its front, and leave room for the lid. Bedside safe guides name size as the usual reason a safe will not fit a nightstand drawer.

Barska AX11556 Biometric Top Opening Drawer Safe
Barska AX11556 Biometric Top Opening Drawer Safe. Image: Barska via Amazon.com
  1. Empty the drawer and measure the inside height from the drawer bottom to the underside of whatever sits above it.
  2. Subtract at least half an inch for the screw heads and your fingers; that is your maximum safe height.
  3. Measure the inside width and depth and compare them with the safe’s exterior, not its interior.
  4. For a top-opening safe, pull the drawer fully open and check that the whole lid clears the cabinet front.
  5. Check the drawer runners: a 22-23 lb safe plus its contents needs full-extension slides or a sturdy wooden drawer.

Applied to our picks, a drawer with 4 in of inside height only takes the Vaultek (2.625 in). At 5 in you can add the Fort Knox (4.25 in), the Amazon Basics (4.4 in) and the Barska keypad safe (4.53 in); the Barska AX11556 (5 in) needs about 5.5 in.

How to mount a drawer safe so it stays put

A drawer safe that is not bolted down is a lockbox a thief carries out under one arm. A r/homedefense reply puts it plainly: light safes are “not really fireproof, but if you bolt them down they are reasonably secure against most casual theft attempts.”

Barska Top Opening Keypad Safe AX13762
Barska Top Opening Keypad Safe AX13762. Image: Barska via Amazon.com
  1. Set the safe so its lid or door opens toward you when the drawer is pulled out.
  2. Mark the pre-drilled holes on the drawer bottom and drill pilot holes.
  3. Bolt through the drawer bottom with the included hardware, adding large washers under thin plywood.
  4. Where the drawer can be lifted off its slides, screw a stop block or fixed shelf under it, or mount the safe to a fixed shelf instead.
  5. Test the lock, the backup key and the drawer travel before you load it.

Our guide to bolting down a safe covers anchors for floors and furniture in more detail.

Drawer safe problems owners run into, and the fix

The common drawer safe failures are dead batteries, noise and a lost key, and each has a simple fix.

Dead batteries and fingerprint misreads

An owner on r/CAguns wrote, “Ive had a single night stand safe from Amazon and had issue where the battery runs out or the finger print doesn’t work etc. tossed it after”. The fix: change batteries on a calendar date, enroll each finger several times and keep the backup key outside the drawer, because every electronic lock here falls back on a plain lock and key. Or skip batteries with the Fort Knox Simplex lock. Our SentrySafe battery replacement guide shows the steps for a typical keypad safe.

Lost keys and lockouts

A r/Safes reply sums it up: “If you lost the override key it’s a problem.” Note the key number, store the key away from the safe and register the safe with the maker. Opening a safe without its code or key is a job for the maker or a licensed locksmith, with proof that it is yours.

Beeps, lids and kids in the house

Keypad beeps can give the drawer away; the Barska models have a silent mode. Parents in r/guns favor a locked quick-access box over a loose gun in the drawer, one saying it “Keeps kids out, easy to access, and comes with a key if battery dies.”

How we picked these drawer safes

We picked drawer safes that at least two independent top-ranking guides recommend and that Amazon US had in stock on October 30, 2026. I have not handled these safes; every spec comes from the maker, a retailer spec sheet or the Amazon listing. Owner praise and complaints come from Reddit, retailer review pages and review summaries, 14 owner reports in all.

The Fort Knox PB1 and Vaultek 20 Series line appear in Pew Pew Tactical’s and SafesWorld’s bedside lists. The Barska AX11556 and Barska’s top-opening keypad safe line appear in How To Home Safety’s drawer safe list and Cape Fear Investigative’s roundups, and Bob Vila picks the Amazon Basics slim safe as its best mini safe. The Stack-On PDS-1500 and the SentrySafe QAP1BE from Sentry Group also qualified, but both showed as unavailable on Amazon US, so we left them out.

Drawer safe limits: fire, burglary and storage rules

A drawer safe protects against curious hands and quick theft, not fire, so plan fire protection separately. None of these five has a UL 72 fire class or an Intertek (ETL) fire test, and none of the makers claims one. Keep deeds, a passport and other original documents in a fire-rated box, such as the picks in our fireproof document safe guide.

None has a UL burglary rating either. If a handgun goes in, check your state’s and city’s official firearm storage rules; Fort Knox’s California DOJ listing helps California buyers, but we do not give legal advice.

Before you order, measure the inside of your nightstand drawer against our safe buying checklist. If the gun will ride in a car or a bag too, our pistol safe guide covers portable picks.

Questions safe buyers ask

What is the best drawer safe?

For a handgun, I pick the Fort Knox Original Pistol Box PB1 because its Simplex mechanical lock needs no batteries and its body is 10-gauge steel. For valuables such as cash, jewelry and passports, the Barska AX11556 (fingerprint) or the Barska Top Opening Keypad Safe (keypad) fit most large drawers and include backup keys.

Can a drawer safe be bolted to a drawer?

Yes. All five of our picks ship with mounting hardware or pre-drilled holes. Bolting to the drawer bottom only helps if the drawer cannot be pulled out of the furniture, so we suggest bolting through the drawer into a fixed shelf or frame where you can.

Is a drawer safe fireproof?

Not these five. None carries a UL or Intertek fire rating, and the makers do not claim one. For papers that must survive a fire, use a UL-rated fire safe or chest and keep the drawer safe for quick-access items.

What size drawer safe fits a nightstand?

Measure the drawer's inside height, width and depth. The exterior heights of our picks run from 2.625 in (Vaultek 20 Series) to 5 in (Barska AX11556), and a top-opening safe also needs the drawer to slide out past the whole lid.

What happens if the battery dies in a drawer safe?

Electronic drawer safes open with a backup key, and the Vaultek also takes external power. Keep that key outside the drawer, change batteries on a schedule, or pick the battery-free Fort Knox PB1.
